Today we need to discuss the seven deadly sins before we get to the specific virtues in this new year It is always best to diagnose a problem before we come up with a prognosis So letrsquos start there Sin creates the proclivity to do harm (sin) it engenders vice by repetition of the same acts This results in perverse inclinations which cloud conscience and corrupt the concrete judgment of good and evil Thus sin tends to reproduce itself and reinforce itself but it cannot destroy the moral sense at its root (CCC 1865) So if we wish to sin no more one needs to first identify their weaknesses and counter it with virtue that is the ldquohabitual and firm disposi-tion to do goodrdquo (CCC 1833) Seven deadly sins also known as the Capital Vices or Capital Sins is this monthrsquos topic In order to understand identify and conquer our sins it is helpful to know the major sins in our lives These are the sins identified by the Catechism of the Catholic Church 1866 as Lust Gluttony Greed Sloth Wrath Envy and good old faithful ever present Pride In summary below for our examination are some of the defi-nitions of the seven sins so the reader might take inventory of their lives before we jump into specific virtues to counter these sins in the new year
Lust (Latin luxuria) is a psychological force producing intense wanting or longing for an object or circumstance fulfilling the emo-tion Lust can take any form such as the lust for generally sexuality (love of the flesh real or imaginary like pornography) but also for love of money or power
Gluttony (Latin gula) derived from the gluttire meaning to gulp down or swallowrdquo Means over-indulgence and over-consumption of food drink or wealth items particularly as status symbols
Greed or Avarice (Latin avaritia) is an inordinate or insatiable longing for material gain be it food money status or power
Sloth (Latin acedia) is considered the most difficult sin to define and credit as sin since it refers to a jumble of notions dating from antiq-uity and including mental spiritual pathological and physical states One definition is a habitual disinclination to exertion or simple lazi-ness Christians know that one day we must all answer for the times we did nothing and were not productive like the talents buried in-stead of multiplying it 10 50 or 100
Wrath (Latin ira) The emotion anger also known as wrath or rage is an intense emotional state It involves a strong uncomfortable and hostile response to a perceived provocation hurt or threat This is kin to though shall not kill
Envy (Latin invidia) is an emotion which occurs when a person lacks anothers superior quality achievement or possession and either desires it or wishes that the other lacked it Aristotle defined envy as pain at the sight of anotherrsquos good fortune stirred by ldquothose who have what we ought to haverdquo
Pride (Latin superbia) is an emotional state deriving positive affect from the perceived value of a person or thing with which the subject has an intimate connection It may be inwardly or outwardly directed The most powerful and indiscriminate sin everyone person must battle
The real good news is that it does not matter what sins you have committed in life no matter what you have done no matter where you have been we can all be reconciled in a good confession That confession needs to be contrite concise concrete clear and complete But then the ldquorubrdquo because we are forgiven of our sins we are to go forth and sin no more we commit to changing our lives Ever find yourself going to confession and reciting the same sins over and over again Because of concupiscence (original sin the inclination of doing wrong) how do we do that if we have picked up bad habits that created the proclivity to sin The only answer is to combat these sins and make an exerted intentional act to fill the void with good virtues remember the ldquohabitual and firm disposition to do goodrdquo going forward We will over the course of the year highlight monthly one very concrete virtue so we can gain an ever- lasting appreciation for that virtue Finally a virtue acquired habitually will tend to lift all the other virtues you desire to acquire Meaning once virtues are habitual the other virtues acquisition becomes easier over time
