FEBRUARY 11, 2014
February 17 - Presidents’ Day
Dear Lealman Families,
It’s hard to believe January 31st was our 100th day of school. It’s a great way to celebrate student accomplishments since the start of the school year.
The students and staff at Lealman are working extremely hard towards academic excellence.
The 8th graders are preparing for FCAT Writing on Tuesday, February 25th. Beginning Tuesday, April 22nd, all students will take the FCAT Reading
and Mathematics. Eighth graders will also take the FCAT Science.
Our school is always looking for volunteers. Parent volunteers offer a great support base for the school community while showing their children the
importance of participating in the larger community. It is also a great way to interact with teachers, administrators, and other parents on a regular
basis.
I am pleased to announce Dan Newheart, Tampa Bay Rays, and Albert Brandiff, City of St. Petersburg, who will represent Lealman in the District’s
Outstanding Volunteer of the Year celebration. We appreciate the countless hours they provide to Lealman Intermediate. Best of luck to both!
Here are the results from our winter break Reading Challenge and V-Math Live Challenge:
Top 5 for Reading: Bobby Eubanks, winner of the IPod Shuffle which was donated by the Pinellas County Secondary Reading Office, Marshay
Bizzell, Diamond Newsome, Mayiah Danford, and Bryshon Davis each received Chick-Fil-A gift cards.
Top 5 for Math: Jacobie Williams, winner of two tickets to AirHeads Trampoline Arena, donated by the Pinellas Sheriff’s Police Athletic League,
Kayla Reeves, Daneisha Barbery, Leasia McCrea, and Cashton Main each received $10.00 gift cards donated by the Lealman PTA.
Feedback from our parents, guardians, and community is very important to me. Enclosed in this newsletter (page 4) is a survey I would like for you to
complete and return by Friday, March 7th. Thank you in advance for taking time to do so.
Sincerely,
Busara F. Pitts, Principal

Summer Bridge Program Summer Bridge programs are aimed at preventing summer learning losses and preparing stu-
dents for success at the next grade level. Core Summer Bridge programs for elementary, mid-
dle and high school students will be offered Monday through Thursday, from June 17- July 24.
Elementary school program hours will be 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., Middle school program hours will
be 8 a.m. to noon, and high school program hours will be 8 to 11 a.m.
The programs, which include enrichment activities, are especially important for students who
are performing below grade level in reading or math. They are also beneficial for students who are performing at grade
level but need extra support to stay on track.
In mid-March, parents of students who are performing below grade level will begin receiving invitations for their children
to participate. Please talk with your child’s teacher if you don’t receive an invitation and think your child will benefit from
Summer Bridge. Some details and locations are still being finalized. Check out the district’s Summer Bridge website,
www.pcsb.org/summerbridge, for the latest information about Summer Bridge programs. Our program will be housed at
Meadowlawn Middle.

Thank you to the great volunteers
at Lealman Intermediate and
throughout Pinellas County
Schools!

VOLUNTEERS
PARENT SURVEY
Thank you for completing the
Pinellas County Title I School
Parent Survey. If you have not
turned in your survey, please
send it in so we can make sure
we have your feedback! If you
would like another copy, have
your child pick one up at the front desk.
Being in school all day, every day, helps your child get the most
out of middle school. Encourage good attendance with these ideas:
Point out that there is no substitute for being in class. Your youngster needs
to be present to hear teachers explain concepts, to participate in group projects
and class discussions, and to ask questions.
Schedule doctor, dentist, and orthodontist appointments for before or after
school hours whenever possible. If you can’t try to arrange them for lunchtime.
It will be easier for your child to get up on time for school if he has had at least nine hours of sleep. Set
a reasonable bedtime, and make sure he puts away electronic devices so he isn’t tempted to stay awake
to read messages or play games.

When you are involved and engaged in your child’s education, great things can happen!
At the SAC and PTA meeting in February and March, we will be discussing the 2014-15 Title I
Compact and the Parent Involvement Plan (PIP). It is critical that we have your ideas
and opinions. Please mark you calendar and make every effort to attend and share
your input for the 2014-2015 School Year!
SAC/PTA—3rd Tuesday of the month starting at 6:00 PM
February 18, 2014 March 18, 2014
Our school Compact and Parent Involvement Plan (PIP) is jointly
developed by parents and other stake holders. As part of the Par-
ent Involvement Plan to help parents of Lealman Intermediate (LIS) students, LIS offered
these activities in 2013: The Cobra Stomp; Annual Meeting and Open House; Just Read
It! Reading Parent Involvement Night; and Science/Social Studies Parent Involvement
Night. We kicked off 2014 with Enrichment Night and the next scheduled activity will be
Math Night, February 20th.
In addition, to these parent activities, the LIS staff participated in Bullying Prevention and Common Core
training to create an atmosphere helpful to parent involvement and highest student achievement. In an effort
to keep parents informed, we communicate via the newsletter, phone calls, flyers, the electronic marquee in
front of the school and stickers on student’s Cobra Cards.
The complete PIP is located on our website at http://www.lealman-ms.pinellas.k12.fl.us/ or it may be viewed in the Title I Parent red notebook available in the school’s front office. If you would like to have a complete copy of the 2013-14 LIS PIP, please contact our Family & Community Liaison, Dianna King at 528-5802 ext. 2011. Let your voice be heard! We care what you have to say!
If you cannot attend, please call or write to share your input with the Title I Coordinator, April Rohrig 727-528-
5802 x 2005, rohriga@pcsb.org or Title I Family & Community Liaison, Dianna King 727-528-5802 x2011,

Teachers-Out-of-Field
Our outstanding teachers are dedicated to our students and to the goal of having them reach their highest
level of academic achievement. Our teachers are all certified by the state of Florida. In addition, they attend
workshops designed to keep them current with the best strategies to help our students achieve. The follow-
ing teachers are considered out-of-field until he/she completes additional training in their subject area.

Initial teacher selection and on-going determination of class assignments is a challenging process. It often
becomes necessary to assign a teacher to instruct a course/subject for which he/she is not currently certi-
fied. These decisions are made with consideration to teacher competence and with a continual commitment
to highest student achievement.
