Explanation texts are writings based onfacts used to explain the sequence,

causeand effect of an event.

The purpose of an explanation is to give

Tsunamis occur when there is a large-scale disturbanceof the sea. The most common causes are earthquakes,but volcanic eruptions or landslides can also have thesame effect, forcing a vast amount of water suddenlyupwards, creating enormous waves which can hit landat up to 45mph, often with devastating effect.

1.Explanation text answers the questions “how” and “why”.

7. It uses time signal words such as: first, then, next, after, finally

8. They are written in present tense. For example: are, turns, happens

9. They use action words (verbs). For example: falls, rises, changes
