The Athenaeum annual 5% dues increase will become effective April 1, 2020, and will be reflected on your April statement. Thank you very much for your continued support.
David is an Assistant Cook in The Athenaeum’s kitchen. He has been with The Athenaeum for three years and started in the stewarding department. It became evident to Executive Chef Kevin that David worked hard and had a “can do” attitude and was quickly promoted to his current position in the kitchen. Chef Kevin praises David for “a great job”. David thrives in our fast-paced kitchen and says that he enjoys pushing himself to keep learning about cooking. He is passionate about being a part of the efficient kitchen team that creates all the delicious plates our members love. “Working here,” David says, “I learn something new every day.” Born and raised in Pasadena, David previously worked at the Pasadena Civic Center and loves attending music festivals in his spare time.
Congratulations, David, on a job well done!
March – Fun Facts
Did you know that The Athenaeum will be celebrating its 90th birthday in November this year? We are gearing up to hold a big celebration for the Big 90 on Saturday, November 14. More details to come.
Did you know that The Athenaeum was built during the depression? Mr. and Mrs. Alan C. Balch gave the Institute a gift of $500,000 in stocks in 1929. Their gift was cashed by Caltech and served as the fund that financed the construction of the club.
When The Athenaeum first celebrated opening its doors at a dinner in November 1930, the furnace did not work. Here is an excerpt from our 75th anniversary video, “Although an historic event, it was, apparently, not a flawless one. At R.A. Millikan’s request, engineering professor Robert Daugherty spent most of the party in the basement trying to get the furnace to work.”
Another celebratory dinner occurred in February 1931 when Einstein came to Caltech and a dinner was hosted by the Institute on his behalf at The Athenaeum.
Fact or fiction? I have been told that Einstein resided at a house that was within walking distance to Caltech when he was visiting the Institute during the first three winters of the early 1930s. Albert, however, was being besieged by admirers when he made the walk to Caltech. Being the shy scientist, he and his wife, Elsa, gave up the house and opted to stay in an Athenaeum suite that is now named in his honor.
Did you know that the buffet at lunch is the most popular choice of members? An average 33% of our lunch diners opt for the buffet daily. And, the Cobb Salad and the Kobe burger are always on the top 10 bestsellers at lunch.
When we first served the Impossible Burger at lunch in the Dining Room and at the Rath al Fresco last year, it surpassed Kobe burger sales. Members were curious and wanted to find out if the Impossible was as good if not better than a real burger. The curiosity has now been satiated and the Kobe burger still rules!
I look forward to seeing you at The Athenaeum. Please drop by my office when you are next at the club.
