The Founding of the Evergreen Plantation

• Evergreen Plantation was built in 1790 as a Creole-style farmhouse.

• Although we are not certain who built the plantation, it is believed that the original builder was Christophe Haydel.

• In 1832 it was remodeled to a Classical Revival style by Pierre C. Becnel.

Where is the Evergreen Plantation?

• Evergreen Plantation is located in Louisiana’s Mississippi Delta, about 45 miles from New Orleans.

Plantation Grounds• In all, the Evergreen Plantation has 37

buildings.• Of these buildings 22 are slave cabins.• There is also 2 pigeonniers, 2

garconieries, a privy, a kitchen, a guesthouse, and an overseer’s house.

• On the property are 200-year-old live oaks.

Slaves• The Evergreen Plantation did house

slaves.• The 1860 census shows 103 slaves living

at Evergreen plantation.

Slave Quarters• Evergreen is one of only a few

plantations whose slave cabins still exist in their original form.

• The cabins are arranged in a double row (11 per side).

Crops• The Evergreen Plantation grew sugar

cane, which was the main crop.• People continue to use the property as

an operating sugar cane plantation today.

Fun Facts• The plantation owner’s home is

sometimes referred to as the “big house”.

• 29 of the 37 buildings were built during the antebellum period.
