Are you searching a new location or partner for
your company? Business success in one geographic
location doesn’t necessarily follow a company to a
new setting. After all, the strategic value of a new
location depends on three things:
1. The strength of available resources, such as nearby
supporting industries, R&D centers and universities;
2. A company’s capability in outperforming compe-
titors through innovation, cost reduction or by
boosting sales in the most promising markets;
3. The ability to retrieve and apply knowledge and
to collaborate with relevant business partners in
this new environment.
Together with its partners, the East Netherlands
Development Agency is ready to provide you with
the right support at exactly the right time.
East Netherlands, Gateway to EuropeEurope’s main Cleantech & Energy region is strategically located in the business heart of Europe, alongside many of the region’s most exciting business markets, such as the high-tech markets in neighboring Germany.

The power of the region is evidenced by the continuous stream
of innovations in the bio-based economy, circular economy,
clean energy, smart mobility, smart industry, waste recycling,
high-tech systems & materials, and nanotechnology.
What makes East Netherlands such an attractive location
for collaborating in the Cleantech & Energy sector?
Cleantech & Energy - Business Heart of Europe • The entire value chain for the Cleantech & Energy sector
is located in East Netherlands. This means that lines of
communication are very close and short. Innovations come
easier if there is a close cooperation between small- and
medium-sized companies, multinationals, knowledge
institutes, educational institutes and government agencies.
• The region of East Netherlands is precisely one-hour travelling
distance from both Amsterdam Schiphol and Düsseldorf
airports, which makes it a very attractive location for
accessing a number of distant international markets.
• Startups get special support through the offering of facility
locations and support through business incubator centers
that focus on Cleantech & Energy in the region. There are
a number of outstanding examples: The Energy Club and
The Greenhouse (both in Arnhem), Plus Ultra (Wageningen
University), Cleantech Center (Zutphen) and The Gallery
(University of Twente, Enschede) are but a few.
R&D Facilities• Facility sharing has long been an accepted practice in East
Netherlands. Universities, business incubators, even waste
treatment facilities, offer shared facilities here. Companies
are offered the possibility to both accelerate their innovations
as well as lower their costs by making use of each other’s
R&D facilities.
Government Support • European, national and regional government agencies
support the business community in the Cleantech & Energy
sector with various government sponsored innovation
programs and subsidies.
• The regional government offers expanded support by, among
others, organizing international missions and matchmaking
events. At these, companies are able to find suitable inter-
nationally reputable R&D partners amongst a selection of
other companies and universities.
Multilingual Professionals • Some 35,000 professionals are working in East Netherlands
in the Cleantech & Energy sector. The majority of these
professionals speak and work in multiple languages,
including English and German.
• The Netherlands is one of the safest countries in the
world and doing business in English is relatively easy.
Foreign companies, expats and their families find the
Netherlands a pleasant country in which to live and work.
There are three well-known international schools in
East Netherlands.
• There is a close alignment between the programs that
educational institutes offer and the demands of the
workplace in the Netherlands. This is especially true of
the Cleantech & Energy sector. Concrete examples of this
are the Sustainable Electrical Energy Center of Expertise
(SEECE, of the HAN University of Applied Sciences of Arnhem
and Nijmegen) project and the Green Energy Initiative
program of the University of Twente (Enschede).
A Region of OpportunitiesEast Netherlands offers companies a thriving entrepreneurial climate in the Cleantech & Energy sector. The local business community, governments and educational institutes all work closely together here on bringing cleantech innovations successfully to the market.

with the kiEMT Foundation, DNV KEMA and the energy
distri bution companies Alfen, Alliander and TenneT.
By making facilities available, sponsoring innovative
projects and sharing knowledge, these companies and
organizations invest in specialized talent for the Dutch
energy sector. The number of students enrolled in
SEECE-oriented education and training programs has
shown a 35% annual increase. At least 250 students have
graduated in 2016 and have been snapped up by compa-
nies in the Cleantech & Energy sector. The technical skills
of these students have been honed through the evermore
popular studies such as electrical, mechanical, and indus-
trial engineering programs. The students have explored
the combination of energy and technology through
courses such as Power Course and Smart Grids. Especially
relevant for companies that are operating internationally:
a large number of these study programs are held in English.
