Summary of initial results
58% of all European children have a profile on a social networking site. Usage increases
significantly by age
While 2/3 of the children have their profile set to private or partially private, only half of
the children using the Internet (54%) know how to change privacy settings on a social
networking profile, dropping to 1/3 with the 11-12 year olds
One in two have up to 50 contacts and 19% have fewer than 10. One in five (20%) has
between 100 and 300 contacts, while 9% have more than 300 contactsbetween 100 and 300 contacts, while 9% have more than 300 contacts
Most contacts are offline friends, or friends of friends. 12% met on the Internet
A Social Networking site is the most common place to meet someone online that a child
later meets offline (compared to other Internet services)
A Social Networking site is the most common place to experience bullying (however, the
numbers here are low overall)
Very few report such occurrences to the ISP/SNS provider (12%)
