varietyoffacultyfrombusiness,history,modernlanguages,andmanymoredepartments.TheCenteriscurrentlyexploringma\ersofTransatlanLcrelaLonsbetweentheUSandtheEU.ThishasincludedtalksatEmoryUniversity,aworkshoponTTIPtobeheldatendofApril,andaworkshoponprotecLngprivacynextyearincludingprofessorPeterSwire.GeorgiaTechhashostedambassadors,includingtheEuropean Union ambassador, His Excellency David O’Sullivan, and the French ambassador, HisExcellencyGérardAraud. The Center has hosted events on the implicaLons of the Climate Changesummit, inwhichtheFrenchconsulargeneralparLcipated.TheCenterhas foundthatcollaboraLngwithothersinthisregardhasworkedwell.Theyhaveworkedwithothercenters,relevantgroupsinAtlanta, and the World Affairs Council. Recent goals for the Center have included improveddisseminaLonthroughthewebsiteandsocialmedia,publishingpapersmoregenerallyaswellastheseriesdealingwithtriangulardiplomacy.Asofrightnow,alllectureshavebeenpostedtothewebsite.

Henry Steck represented Alexandru Balas, the Jean Monnet Module Coordinator at SUNYCortland’s campus. SUNYCortlandhouses anEUAtlanLsmobility grant inpartnershipwith severalinsLtuLons. Other partnerships include an EU in Central New York project, along with Syracuse,Bingham, etc. The aim of this is to engage young scholars in teaching while researching the EU,insLtuLonalizeEUstudiesincolleges,andenhancetheknowledgeaboutEUforstudentswhostudyabroad.Thisprojectprovides interdisciplinarycoursesontheEuropeanUnion inhistory,arthistory,economics, educaLon,peace studies, sportsmanagement, andmanymoreareas.AcLviLes includeSkypesessionswithacolleaguefromRomania,anEUfilmseries,amodelEUsimulaLon,andlectures

DeborahReed-Danahay is the JeanMonnetChair at SUNYBuffalowho representedherinsLtuLon in January. SUNY-Buffalo’sEuropean studies iniLaLves coordinatewithCanada and western New York. Throughthese collaboraLons, there have beeninternaLonal conferences on Lisbon Treaty.In 2015 Deborah Reed-Danahay wanted toformanetworkoncirculaLonandEuropeanIdenLtyandstartedawholenewcurriculumin university. At SUNY Buffalo, everyfreshman must take a freshman seminar,and Deborah Reed-Danahay has developedan EU-centered one which uses digicaLonfor e-poreolios and does projects on

different topics,suchas theScoQshreferendum.Asa JeanMonnetChair, shedoesadisLnguishedlectureeachyear.Thisyear’slecturewillbeonciLzenship,belonginginEU,andissuesofmigraLon.

ShewillbegivingatalkinBuffaloonmigraLon,partneringwiththesocialworkschoolontheSyrianrefugeecrisis.

AkasemiNewsome,JeffPennington,andNogaWizanskyrepresentedUniversityofCalifornia-Berkeley at themeeLng. UC Berkeley houses the InsLtute of EU studies, which itself houses nineinsLtutes including the Jean Monnet Center of Excellence. The Jean Monnet Center’s focus is onpioneeringresearchofglobalEUchallengesandharnessingBerkeley’sknowledgeofEU.Thisentailsathree-pronged approachof educaLon, global trade and investment, and EUmanagement of globalchallenges.TheCenterworkstopreventEUstudiesfrombecomingoverlyspecializedbybringingindifferentdepartments.TheinsLtuLoniscurrentlyworkingonanewlycreatedemphasisontheEUindoctoral studies. Furthermore, EU Studies scholars at Berkeley are now making use of theconstrucLonofwordcloudsortagcloudsbyfindingthemostfrequentlyusedwordstocharacterizeanddescribecrisesindifferentmemberstates.OtherareasofresearchincludereconcilingTTIPandotherFreeTradeAgreements,comparingTurkeytoEUforbestpracLcesinmigraLon,andwhetherEUinsLtuLonslearnfromthepastorhaveashort-termapproach.OtheracLviLesincludeaconferenceon a be\er way forward for Ukraine, a conference on African athletes and EU migraLon, and anundergraduateresearchconferenceatClaremont’sScrippsCollege.DuringthisparLcularconference,thetoptenpapersarepublishedinajournalandsomeofthetopparLcipantsreceiveastudytourtoBrussels.

FeliciaNaranjoMarLnezandSarahEdwardsrepresentedtheUniversityofDenver.TheCenterwas previously located at the University of Colorado-Boulder since 2008. The transiLon to Denverincludedanewwebsite,anew logo,newpartnerships in thecommunity,andhasprovidedseveralopportuniLestocohostorganizaLonswhoare internaLonally-minded,suchasWorldDenver,WorldAffairsCouncil,etc.TheCenterisstarLngtoworkwiththeUniversityClubandmembersareverykeentolearnaboutEurope.TheMountainWestpartnershipconLnueswithWyoming,ArizonaState,andNewMexico.TheCenteralsohasconnecLonswiththeboardoftheWorldTradeCenterandWorldDenver,aswellastheOfficeofEconomicDevelopment.ThenewCenterhasreachedoutandbuiltarelaLonshipwith theUniversity’s EUAffairs student forum.A large amountof success in a\racLngand retainingspeakers isachievedbybuildinga speakeragenda throughoutDenver so thatvisiLngspeakersarenotjustattheUniversity.OnepartnershipincludedagroupcalledInspiringMindswherelocal civic-mindedyoungmothershavemeeLngswhile their kidsare in school. This group recentlyhad a collaboraLon with the Center on the challenges and concerns of the Syrian refugee crisis.Another notable partnership is the Air Force Academy, which resulted in a conference oncybersecurityheldattheUniversityClub.Recenteventshaveincludedarenewableenergysummit,apartnershipwithOfficeofEconomicDevelopmentandInternaLonalTradetohostadelegaLonfromSpain,andsharingtalentwithintheJeanMonnetcommunitybyhosLngJeanMonnetChairMiladaVachudovafromtheUniversityofNorthCarolina.

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign was represented at the meeLng by MaximeLarive,SebnemOzkan,andNeilVanderMost.UniversityofIllinoishasaEuropeanUnionCenterwitha Title VI grant as well as JeanMonnet Center of Excellence and GeQng to Know Europe grants.Current focus areas include strengtheningTransatlanLc trust, TTIP, economics andfinance, and themovementofpeoplethroughmigraLon.TheCenterhastheirownMaster’sinEUstudies,whichwasoneofthefirstinthecountry.WhiletheCenterdoesnothavespecificEUfaculty,thereareover120affiliated faculty. There is an execuLve commi\ee to help with implementaLon of the Center andGraduate Assistants funded through the Title VI grant. Notable courses include courses onMediterraneanandEasternEurope,researchacLviLesonEUpoliLcsandpolicy,CommonAgriculturalPolicy,IslamandEurope,andmanyothers.AlongwiththeMAinEUstudiesthereisalsoagraduateminorandafiveyearBA/MAprogram.

MelanieGoergmaier represented JeanMonnet Chair JoaquínRoy at themeeLng.Miami hasbeenawardedseveralgrants,includingagrantforanewbuilding,anewEUFellowdoingcomparaLveresearchontheUSlegislaLvesystem,andfundingforaconferenceonTTIPresulLnginapublishedbook.UniversityofMiamiaimstohavea“triangle”connecLonamongLaLnAmerica,US,andtheEU,which might be consequenLal for future trade agreements. The locaLon is ideal for this type ofconnecLon,andmanycourseshaveatriangular(AtlanLccommunity)connecLon.Theycurrentlyoffer

UniversityofNorthCarolinawasrepresentedby two representaLves from their Center,John Stephens and KaLe Linder, as well asJean Monnet Chair Milada Vachudova. Dr.Vachudova will be teaching four courses onEUstudiesoverthelifeLmeofthegrant.Sheis currently leading a conference for theCenter. As a Center, they are working toimprove their TransatlanLcMaster’s degree.Theyhavegrantswhichallow them tobringpracLLoners over from Europe. CooperaLngwithothercenters isalsoa largepriority.EUToday is a course taken by seniorundergraduates and TransatlanLc Master’sstudents. This is a one credit class - team

taughtbyDr.Stephens,Dr.Vachudova,andavisiLngscholar-todiscussrelevanttopicsinEUStudies.TheyarefocusedonbuildingacommunityofEUstudentsandhelpingstudentsestablishachapterof

EuropeanHorizons. Students have a\ended the EuropeanHorizons’ European Student ConferenceandthecenterispuQngonsevenconferencesoftheirownoverthelifeLmeofthegrant.TheyaimtoconLnue bringing different departments together, enhancing social media, and adding a virtualplaeormofacademicdocuments.

AllysonDelnoreandSteve Lund representedthe University of Pi\sburgh at the meeLng.The European Studies Center at theUniversity of Pi\sburgh is home to thePi\sburghPapersontheEuropeanUnion,aswellasthepopularConversaLonsonEurope(CoE). CoE is a series of policy-orientedvideoconferences on different wickedproblems,suchastherecentoneonclimatec h a n ge a n d s u s t a i n a b i l i t y. T h e s evideoconferences bring in experts, streamthem for people to a\end the sessionremotely, record the talks, and add them toYouTube. The Center is currentlyworking toredesign a course in the EU cerLficateprogramandhasnearlyreceivedapprovalfor

anewcerLficateinTransatlanLcStudies.Theyareworkingtocreatestudyguidesatthecollegelevel,fromwhichstudentscouldanswerquesLonsforextracredit.ThesecanbeapplicabletoK-12students(specifically 9-12). Yearly endeavors include the Graduate Student Conference on the EU,undergraduatemodelEU,andhighschoolmodelEU.TheESC isbeginningtobrandtheEUcourseswithpracLcalapplicaLonforstudentsseekingtoacquireskillsforthejobmarket.TheK-12offeringshavegreatly increasedattheUniversityofPi\sburgh.This includesanupcomingfully fundedstudytourtoBrusselsinJuneforK-12teachersandfacultyfromcommunitycollegesandminorityservinginsLtuLons.TheCenterisalsoworkingtocreateanewPhDinEuropeanCulturalStudies.

James Caporaso representedUniversity ofWashington,whichwas one of the first EuropeanUnionCentersofExcellence.TheCenteriscurrentlyinthemidstofwelcomingnewfacultyandstaff.EnrollmentforEUstudiescourseshasdeclinedsincethestartofthefinancialcrisis.However,coursesconLnuetobeoffered,studentsconLnuetotakethem,andgraduatestudentshaveaskedformore.UniversityofWashingtonhosts theWestCoastUndergraduateModelEU inFebruary.Thisyear thetopicswillincludeTTIPandtherefugeecrisis.Thereisalsoagreatopportunityforgraduatestudentswith theGraduateStudentWorkshop.This takesplace in late springandbrings inPhDstudents towork for twodaysanddiscuss theirdissertaLons. Facultyandothergraduate students criLque thework.Therearealsoresearchgrantsforstudentstodosummerresearch.TheheadoftheTaiwanesenaLonalJeanMonnetNetworkfromNaLonalUniversityofTaiwancamethroughthissemesterwithideasaboutthingstodoincooperaLonwiththeUniversityofWashington.

Nils Ringe and Elizabeth Covington represented the University of Wisconsin-Madison. TheUniversity is home to a Title VI NaLonal Resource Center and a Center for German and EuropeanStudies.With respect to the JeanMonnet Programme,Madison has found success in the form ofChair, Center, Project, andModule grants.Areasof specialty include studiesof legislaLvenetworksinsideEuropeanParliament,preliminarynetworksoflanguagemulLlingualism,thepoliLcaleconomyoftheEuropeanUnion,andcomparaLveregionalintegraLonfocusingontheEU.Recently,theCenterhashosted Joseph Jupille,GeorgeRoss,andCharlesWyplosz.RegardingopportuniLes for students,

the Center helps to coordinate teams to send to Model EUs throughout the naLon, sponsors achapter of the European Horizons think tank, and provides graduate support in the form of fullyfunded Research Assistantships. The Center has found success in coordinaLng with otherdepartmentsthroughouttheuniversityaswellasinthecommunity.Recentexamplesofpartnershipsinclude the African Studies program in an event onmigraLon, the American Council on GermanyCenter, the Greater Madison Chamber of Commerce, and the Madison Commi\ee on ForeignRelaLons.

• Withaweightedaverageof3.25outof5,“materialsprovided”wasratedthemostfavorableaspectofthemeeLng.WewouldliketothankalloftheCenters,theCommission,andtheDelegaLonforbringingrelevantmaterialtodistribute.

• At 2.50 out of 5, “Lme of year” was the most unfavorable aspect of the meeLng. We will beworkingwiththeNetworkoverthecourseoftheyeartoassesswaystoalleviatethisconcern.
