CMD’S ERGONOMICS IN SCHOOL CAMPAIGN

At CMD we’ve recognised that there is a lack of knowledge and equipment needed to achieve a good ergonomic standard in classrooms and this is putting pressure on children’s health and wellbeing. We’ve launched our Ergonomics in Schools campaign to bring school leaders’ attention to this problem and to provide them with the information needed to invest in the right equipment for their school.

In 2013 we contacted over 3,500 schools to educate them about the benefits of better ergonomics in the classroom, from better posture to the right equipment to reduce the risk of backache and create a safer learning environment.

Combined with maintaining a good posture, well designed equip-ment in the classroom can help to significantly reduce the risk of upper limb and back pain. Seating position is only part of the prob-lem as technology such as tablets, laptops and desktop computers is now an essential part of classroom life – ensuring these technologies are ergonomically set-up is vital for a healthy and productive educational space.

Simple, inexpensive equipment such as monitor arms, laptop and tablet supports, CPU supports and cable management solutions can make classrooms a safer, healthier and more pleasant place to learn and teach.

The benefits of better classroom ergonomics Physical benefits: Equipment can be easily adjusted to suit the needs of individual teachers and pupils which will reduce back and neck pain

Cognitive benefits: Being able to adjust equipment quickly and easily reduces distractions in the classroom

Behavioural benefits: Not having the correct ergonomic equipment in place can lead to students feeling frustrated which could cause be-havioural problems
