EQs: Explain the difference between inorganic & organic. Compare polar and nonpolar molecules and give an example of each.

Major Elements of LifeCarbon (C)Hydrogen (H)Oxygen (O)Nitrogen (N)Phosphorous (P)Sulfur (S)

Organic Molecules

• Must contain Carbon and Hydrogen• Make up most components of living things

• Ex-Glucose (type of sugar)

MacromoleculesCombine with each other and other elements to form MACROMOLECULES:• Carbohydrates, Lipids, Proteins and

Nucleic Acids

Inorganic Molecules

• Does not contain both carbon and hydrogen

• non-living substances (can sometimes be found in living things)

• Examples: Water, Salt, Iron, Carbon Dioxide

Water

• Chemical Formula: H2O• Structure:

• Electrons are pulled more towards one side of a molecule than the other, resulting in a positive end (pole) and a negative end (pole).

• Example: Water, Sugar

H2O

= Proton (p+)

= Neutron (no)

= Electron (e-)8 protons!

1 proton 1 proton

Two Hydrogen atoms are held to one Oxygen by a weak covalent bond (sharing electrons)

Oxygen’s 8 protons are so positive they pull the electrons away from Hydrogen! This results in the oxygen being very negatively charged!

The hydrogens have a positive charge because of their proton

+ +

= Proton (p+)

= Neutron (no)

= Electron (e-)

NONPOLAR Molecules• Non polar substances have equal charge

distribution (neither end is more + or – than the other)

• Example: oil, CO2

Hydrogen Bond• When water molecules

are close together, the + of the H is attracted to the – of the O on another molecule

• This is called a hydrogen bond.

Processing Cornell Notes• pull out all essential vocabulary• add this question next to its answer in the

notes: Are the 4 macromolecules organic or inorganic AND why?

• come up with at least 2 more of your own (use critical thinking page to help!)

• Fill in the summary pyramid then write a 2-3 sentence summary based on it

Essential Questions
