Some thoughts about

Environmental Education

How can we ask children to care about something if they have no real connection to

it?

How do we develop a sense of caring?

Through contactownership example education

Embedding Environmental Education firmly into the curriculum so it becomes the responsibility of ALL, not just one or two

Composting, worms, recycling, energy efficiency

Using outside as a classroomDevelop a sense of place through

creation, use, knowledge – get them intimately connected with their world

Encouraging the use of all five senses:

Sight - Observation: data collection – and use the data in mathematicsdocumenting change over time (Climate Watch)matching colours

Sound: Music; listening as an observation; poetry; drama

Touch: Get your hands dirty – what is the difference between sand, clay and mud? What can you build with sticks, leaves, stones, clay. Weaving

Taste:Grow it, cook it, eat it.

Smell:Identify plants by their smell. What do compost/soil/wet bush/rain/thunderstorms smell like?
