Oxygen vital for survival and production

All animals need oxygen to stay alive

If oxygen is a bottleneck, the animal priority change; 1 metabolism for survival and operation2 reproduction 3 growth

In water oxygen diffuse 1000 times slower compared to air, this means that oxygen has to be supplied by water movement or direct injection

Waters carrying capacity for oxygen is reduced and fish consumption is increased by temperature, high temperatures can cause low oxygen situation

Low oxygen affects fish by; - Increased mortality (reduced animal welfare, RSPCA guide is 6mg/L )- Reduced feed utilization (increased feed conversion factor)- Reduced growth speed and capacity

The graph shows relationships between oxygen saturation and feed conversion rate (FCR), mortality and speed of growth for salmon. Source: Brett & Grove, 1980.

Effect of oxygen saturation in fish farming

It has been documented that the single most important factor for increasedgrowth and productivity in aquaculture is to maintain sufficient oxygen

saturationlevel over time in the water where the species grow. At saturation level below85%, feed utilisation begins to fall and the fish is increasingly vulnerable tosickness and, in the end, mortality. Trials show that;

at 75% saturation reduced appetite starts to appear

at 60% saturation increased mortality is shown

at 40% saturation there is no appetite among fish

at 30% saturation there is massive mortality

FDO 700 IQWhat does “next generation”

mean?

A new standard for optical D.O. sensors - Highest accuracy from the first moment on.- High stability- Low maintenance

New technologies

- Intelligent membrane with IQMC-technology- Soft «Green Light Technology (GLT)»- (C2 ) -calibrated optics

FDO 700 IQ

Intelligent membrane with IQMC- technology

IQMC = IQ Membrane Calibration = Intelligent Membrane Technology

- Each membrane is individually calibrated

- Values are determined at a factory calibration (which defines the complete characteristics of the membrane)

- All data is stored in a memo chip which is permanently fixed to the membrane.

- Data is automatically transmitted when the membrane is fitted to the sensors.

- Highest accuracy through the whole lifetime (even after a replacement of the membrane)

Other options

Many solution to monitor and control.New developments in the pipeline

– Cheaper, more sensors, built in loggers and power supply

Make it Fishfarmer proof and user friendly

How can measurement be transmitted and monitored?

1. Direct on transmitter, real time, on site.

2. Local transmission to PC, real time, on site. Software, two-way communication. Adjustment possible.(LAN or cable)

3. Local transmission with use of radio. Longer reach than LAN, used normally when out of range for mobile network.

4. Transmission through local network (LAN) to PC, possible further to web server. (broadband). One way, only for monitoring.

5. Transmission through mobile network, GPRS, to web server. (this is “mainstream” solution. Giving access from anywhere.)

Monitoring on PC- software

Until recently there was not much focus on environmental importance of oxygen level, algae and other factors that have influence on “performance" the fish in intensive and commercial sea farming.

Now focus is high. Today we have reliable equipment for the purpose available.

Most common is oxygen, temperature, salinity, tide, wind, and mooring strain.

Monitoring of enviromental situation.

What next?

SSF and Storvik Ltd work together. We build a unit that fits each sites requirements. We train all farm key personnel on the importance of the

data and HOW to use it. Creating Environmental monitor experts on all sites.

– Follow format of AF “super user” which has been a great success.

We match and exceed the demands of all audits and authorities, leading the way in what farmers can and should be doing.

Tell us your needs and we produce the best solution for you.
