ENTREPRENEURSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS

EDPS

Entrepreneurial development programme may be defined as a programme designed to help an individual in strengthening his entrepreneurial motive and in acquiring skills and capabilities necessary for playing his entrepreneurial role effectively.

“It is an attempt to develop person as entrepreneur through structural training.

The main purpose of such entrepreneurial development programme is to widen the base of entrepreneurship by developing achievement motivation and entrepreneurial skills among the less privileged sections of society”.

It has been felt that there is need for systematic effort to identify, develop, nurture and sustain entrepreneurial talents in the interest of the national development.

A well designed EDP envisages three tiered approach:1. Developing achievement motivation and sharpening entrepreneurial   traits and behaviour.2. Guidance on industrial opportunities, incentives, facilities and rules and regulations.3.Developing managerial and operational capabilities.

The concept of entrepreneurial development involves equipping a person with the required information and knowledge used for enterprise building and polishing his entrepreneurial skills.

In these days, entrepreneurial development programmes are treated as an important tool of industrialization and a solution of unemployment problem of India.

The overall aim of an entrepreneurial development programme is to stimulate a person for adopting entrepreneurship as a career and to make him able to identify and exploit the opportunities successfully for new venture.

An entrepreneurship development programme is based on the belief that individuals can be developed to entrepreneur by changing their outlook through an organized and systematic programme .

EDP is not merely a training programme. It is a process of:

Enhancing the motivation, knowledge and skills of the potential entrepreneurs.

Arousing and reforming the entrepreneurial behavior in their day-to-day activities.

Assisting them develop their own ventures or enterprise as a sequel to entrepreneurial action.

OBJECTIVES OF EDPS

Develop and strengthen their entrepreneurial quality i.e motivation and need for achievement.

Analyse environmental set up relating to small industry and small business.

Select product. Formulate project for the product. Understand the process and procedure

involved in setting up a small enterprise.

Know the sources of help and support available for starting up the business.

Know the pros and cons in becoming an entrepreneur.

EDPs let the entrepreneur himself set the objectives for his business and strive for their realization.

Prepare him to accept the uncertainty involved in running a business.

Enable him to take decision. Develop passion for integrity and

honesty. Make him learn compliance with law.

CURRICULUM OF EDPS

The training programme is usually of six weeks duration. It consists of the following six inputs:

a) General Introduction to Entrepreneurship.b) Motivation Training.c) Management Skills.d) Support System and Procedure.e) Fundamentals of Project Feasibility Study.f) Plant Visits.

PHASES OF EDPS

An entrepreneurship development programme consists of the following three phases :

1. Pre – training Phase.2. Training Phase.3. Post – Training Phase. ( Follow up)

EXPERIENTIAL MODEL OF EDP

Initiating Phase .. (Generating Resources)

(to be clear of objective, need & starting the programme).

Stimulating Phase .. (Mobilising Resources )

(motivating & re-inforcing

commitment. Supporting phase .. (Sustaining Resources )

( extending help as far as

possible).

1. Defining the need for entrepreneurship.

2. Conceptualising entrepreneurship.

3. Initiating training & reinforcing entrepreneurial strength.

4. Envisaging support strategy.

5. Follow up of Monitoring institutions.

6. Regulatory and clearance agency.

7. Reporting and evaluating.

NATURE OF PHASE PROGRAMME MANAGEMENT

IMPORTANCE OF EDPS

Economic Growth: EDP is a tool of industrialisation and path to economic growth through entrepreneurship.

Balanced Regional Development: EDP helps in dispersal of economic activities in different regions by providing training and other support to local people.

 Eliminates Poverty and Unemployment : EDPs provide opportunities for self-employment and entrepreneurial careers.

IMPORTANCE OF EDPS (CONTD..)

Optimum use of Local Resources : The optimum use of natural, financial and human resources can be made in a country by training and educating the entrepreneurs.

Successful Launching of New Unit : EDP develops motivation, competence and skills necessary for successful launching, management and growth of the enterprise.

Empowers New Generation Entrepreneurs : EDP, by inculcating entrepreneurial capabilities and skill in the trainees, create new generation entrepreneur who hitherto was not an entrepreneur .

PROBLEMS FACED BY EDPS

Trainer-motivations are not found upto the mark in motivating the trainees to start their own enterprises.

ED organizations lack in commitment and sincerity in conducting the EDP’s.

Non – conducive environment make the trainers motivators role ineffective.

Selection of wrong trainees also lead to low success of EDPs.

Attitude of institutions like banks & financial institutions is not supporting.

INSTITUTIONS PROVIDING ENTREPRENEURSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMMES IN INDIA

National Institute for Entrepreneurship and Small Business Development (NIESBUD)

NIESBUD was established in 1983 by the Ministry of Industry, Government of India. Its main functions and objectives are:.

To help and facilitate various agencies in carrying out training and other entrepreneurship development activities.

To provide vital information support to trainers, promoters and entrepreneurs.

NIESBUD

To evolve effective training strategies. To identify, train and assist potential

entrepreneurs for setting up ventures. This institute acts as a nodal agency. It

organises about 29 national and 6 international training programmes every year.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP DEVELOPMENT INSTITUTE OF INDIA (EDII)

It was established in 1983 by financial institutions. It conducts research, training and institution-building activities for encouraging the participation of backward regions. The main objectives of EDII are:

To increase the supply of trained entrepreneurs through training.

To generate opportunities for self-employment.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP DEVELOPMENT INSTITUTE OF INDIA (EDII)

To improve managerial capabilities of small-scale industries.

To promote small enterprises at rural level.

To contribute to the dispersal of business ownership.
