Grammar Review: Contractions and Conditionals

Conditionals

• Verb to LikeI would like to be a dentist

I’d like to be a dentist

Using “would” means that action has not happened yet but it may in the future

The verb To Like indicates that it’s something that you want.

To BeI am a dentistHe is a dentist

You are a dentist

• Pay attention to the pronoun and conjugation of the verb “to be.”

• Pay attention to the use of a definite article a before the noun (a job in this case)

• Or the article an when the job starts with a vowel (a, e, I, o, u)

Example: an accountant

Lets Brainstorm “Wh” questions for when we meet people.

• Please write these down in your handouts• How to formally greet people in America: eye

contact, initiation, hand shake, tone of voice• I will play music. When it stops please stop

and greet someone and ask a “Wh” question (refer to Unit 1, 3 for help)

• Complete speaking exercise 6A• Get up and find a partner and ask them what is

going on in each picture. example: What are they doing?

They are going for a walk

Pay attention to pronouns for singular use: (he/she)What is he doing/ what is she doing?And plural usage (for a group): use “they”

Weekly Schedule

• As medical practitioners you will have to understand people’s schedules

• Days of the Week: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday

• And then hours

Hour Divisions in the day

• Day Time - Between sunrise and sunset

• Evening – Day starts to turn into night. After 6PM

How to ask people about schedules?

Answering Questions

How role play should work, example: A: What do you do Thursday?B: Thursday I play football. And Thursdays evening I clean my clock.• Please walk around and ask others about

Lets look at Grammar Box 8A• Verb to be Review:

Are you an actor?

• Verb to be: You are interrogative form we inverse to: Are you?

• Do not answer with just yes/or no. • Follow up with a “to be” statement:

Yes, I am. (positive)No, I’m not. (negative)

Is she a pilot?

• Notice how the interrogative form inverses the present tense conjugation: She Is to Is She?

Follow Up Answers both using the same verb tense To Be:

Yes, she is. (Affirmative)No, she isn’t/ No she is not. (Negative)

Are they musicians?

• Inverse of They are Are they?

In the same way as before…..Answers follow with the same verb tense “to be”

Yes, they are. (affirmative)No, they are not. (negative)

Inverse of subject pronoun and verb tense leads to a question.

• 2 with the verb form To Be• 2 with the verb form To Do

After everyone writes their questions we will circulate and practice asking them to each other. To complete (8B)

• I will model this role play with two other people first

• Split into groups of 3. Practice role play for 2 minutes in each role and then switch so everyone is A, B and C one time.

Insert personal details, and edit so conversation makes sense.

Rewrite you dialogue in groups of 3 by including your personal details.

• Please practice your dialogue. Exercise 9B.

• Then I will ask some of the groups to perform for the rest of the class.
