1. In QUT Students, search for ‘Thesis template’ 2. Open ‘Writing and presenting your thesis’3. Under ‘Writing your thesis’, ‘Save as’ the APA Unnumbered version

Layout

► From the ribbon, select ‘View’ and tick the ‘Navigation Pane’• The Navigation headings are hyperlinked to the document• To move whole sections, in the pane, drag and drop headings• Selective printing: Right-click on a heading and select.

Show formatting and Styles

1. Under ‘Home’ tick ‘Show formatting’ for advanced formatting.2. Note the PhD ‘Styles’ for headings and text for selection3. For Styles editing, click the corner chevron to open more detail

* 4. Right click and select ‘Modify’5. Modify in ‘Formatting’

6. Check the ‘Format’ button for more, and click ‘OK’.

Update Table of Contents

4. Place cursor in the Table of Contents and press F95. Select ‘Update entire table’ and click OK

Figures

1. Place cursor in text. From Styles, select ‘PhD Graphic’2. Select the ‘Insert’ tab, and click ‘Pictures to source an image.

3. Right click on the inserted image and select: ‘Insert caption’.4. Then, click on ‘Numbering.’5. Tick ‘Include chapter number’, set separator to ‘Period’. ‘OK’ > ‘OK’

6. Place a full stop and space after the figure number. From ‘Styles’, Choose ‘PhD Figure Caption’ and type your caption.

7. Highlight ‘Figure #’. and apply Italic font typeface.

Update List of Figures

1. In the Template, go to ‘List of Figures’, after ‘Table of Contents’2. Place the cursor in the list area and type F9 to update the list

Tables

1. Place the cursor where appropriate, and insert the table information2. In text, select the table. From the Word ribbon, select to open ‘Table

Tools’ > ‘Design’3. From the ‘Table Styles’ section, select ‘Custom’ to apply the style

4. Under the ‘References’ tab, choose: ‘Insert Caption’5. For ‘Label’, select: ‘Table’, and ensure ‘Exclude label’ is unticked,

and then click on ‘Numbering’6. Choose the numbering format, tick ‘Include chapter number’, and

select ‘period’ for ‘Use separator’, then click: Ok > OK

Tables

7. Type in your table heading, without a full stop, center if necessary8. Highlight the title only, and change the font to Italic.

Update List of Tables

1. In the Template, go to ‘List of Tables’, after ‘List of Figures’2. Place the cursor in the list area and type F9 to update the list

Cross-referencing

1. Position the cursor in-text and type “(see )” and a space2. Under the ‘References’ tab, from the ‘Captions’ group, click the

‘Cross-reference’ icon to open its dialog box.

3. Complete the dialog box, by selecting ‘Figure’, ‘Only label and number’, and ‘Insert as hyperlink’

4. Select ‘which caption’ and click the ‘Insert’ for the cross-reference to appear in the document

5. To update the cross references, select Ctrl + A and then press F9

EndNote Bibliography

1. Insert an in-text citation, and navigate to the end of the document2. From the Home tab, and click the Show/Hide button3. Select from the ¶ symbol above the reference entry, and drag

down past the entry to include the other two ¶ symbols4. Cut it, and paste it after the Bibliography heading, and click Save.

EndNote editing citations1. Under the EndNote tab, click : ‘Edit Citation(s)’2. Add a ‘Prefix’, e.g.: Smith as cited in_

3. Add ‘Pages’:e.g. 23

Un-formatting and re-formattingTo move citations or text with citations safely:

1. Choose ‘Convert to Unformatted Citations’

2. Make required cuts and pastes.3. Choose ‘Update Citations and Bibliography’ to re-format

Master and sub documents1

1. Under the ‘View’ tab, open ‘Outline’, and click ‘Show Document’2. In text, select a whole chapter, then from the Ribbon, click: ‘Create’.3. Save your changes to make them effective
