Regional pilot

Objectives• To support the JISC’s forming of an effective and

sustainable CoP– To provide an appropriate infrastructure and tool kit for the CoP

• To support the CoP through specific activities– Blended f2f and online community facilitation workshops, seminars

and other events – Social software and community tools training events and materials– To support the JISC in developing the next generation of learning,

teaching and administration technologies through the use of the UIDM

• To support the CoP in understanding the value of the UIDM• To support project teams in the use of the UIDM

• To have fun!

We want groups of people to share ideas that lead to projects being developed that are aware at the outset what other projects there are in the programme: projects that reference one another, projects that claim a territory and say:

“We are doing this bit, here, and it relates to what those folks are doing over there, in these ways.”

for us the question is community

We are a support project

Thanks to Nicola van den Berg for pionting to Larry Hinton’s work here http://elgg.jiscemerge.org.uk/nvdb/weblog/663.html

• Structure

• Leadership

• Responsibility

• Budgets

• Authority

All derive from institutional utility based on knowledge, experience and information.

Chaos model of management allows individuals to gain influence on the basis of charisma and hermeneutic approaches.

typology of communities

• Practice

• Interest

• Action

• Purpose

• Circumstance

• Position

http://www.slideshare.net/scottw/social-software-17042/

Thanks to Nicola van den Berg for pionting to Larry Hinton’s work here http://elgg.jiscemerge.org.uk/nvdb/weblog/663.html

• “Communities don’t just happen. There needs to be organisation, structure, coordination, focus and planning”

• You want, “... purposeful, relevant activities with plenty of opportunities for interaction and discussion in small groups.”

• You said we need to nurture conversation, not just presentation

Guiding Principles

• Communities emerge, create and maintain themselves through continual re-negotiation

• Purpose, goals and values are key to driving the CoP formation (some provided by the JISC)

• Our role is to guide, support and facilitate community formation and emergence

• An Appreciative Inquiry led approach is adopted to allow appropriate feedback, guidance and fine tuning.

CommunitiesShare learning, interests, goals, tasks, values, adversity, place, identity …

• how to set up/join a community– Activity 5 http://elgg.jiscemerge.org.uk/news/files/8

• List of communities

Learning technology is a community of practice

Discuss

Don’t build an “e”

We know we need to…• improve the quality of the platform• engage more deeply with the UIDM• avoid duplication of effort across the community• develop collaboration• understand the wider context

Appreciative inqiuiry

shared experience of common authentic artefacts

Some of our artefacts • online showcase from the London

event

Thank you
