Electrifying Electromagnets

4th grade

Jimenez 4th Grade

Problem/Question

• Does the number of winds around the rivet affect the magnet’s strength?

Hypothesis

• If we increase the number of winds around the rivet, then we think that the strength of the electromagnets will increase because of the electromagnetic field.

Control Variable • Battery• Rivet• Circuit• Washers• Wires

• The number of winds

Electrifying ElectromagnetsSet Up

Materials

• Circuit base• Battery• Switch• Wires• Rivet• Washers

Procedure

1) Make a circuit with a switch, battery, wires, and rivet.

2) First trial: wind the wire around the rivet 25 times at the head.

3) Count how many washers it picks up.4) Repeat with 45 winds around the rivet.5) Record your data.

Results• The rivet with 25 winds picked up

an average of 6 washers. The rivet with 45 winds picked up an average of 11.3 washers.

Data Table

Conclusion:The more winds around the rivet the

more washers the electromagnet picked up.

The greater number of winds increased the strength of the electromagnet.
