The Basics

The Basics1. Candidates for office are responsible for familiarizing themselves with

and following all relevant Carnegie Mellon University, Student Senate, and Graduate Student Assembly policies.

2. No person may personally or through an agent intimidate, harass, use or threaten the use of force, violence, or restraint in order to compel or induce any person to vote, abstain from voting, or vote or abstain from voting for a particular candidate or referendum.

3. No campaigning may take place at any polling location during polling hours on the election days, nor may any campaign material be present at a polling location during polling hours.a. This shall exclude candidate platforms received and approved by the

Elections Board at least one (1) week prior to the Student Government Executive and Student Senate elections.

The Basics - Penalty

Violations of these rules may result in penalties of up to ten (10) percent of votes

received, at the discretion of the Elections Board.

(Just 7% of votes would have changed the SBP election in 2012, when there were only

2 candidates)

Graffiti and Postering

● No painting the fence.● Posters are not permitted on doors, walls,

and/or windows at Carnegie Mellon University.

● Everything not covered here that is in the Graffiti and Poster Policy document applies.

Postering in Dorms

● Do NOT poster in dorms yourself!● You should give any posters to the Student

Life office located in Morewood to be distributed by RAs.○ Make sure to do this early because it sometimes

takes a while.● Do NOT give them directly to RAs to

distribute

Libel and Slander

● Libelous or slanderous campaigning is not permitted.

● This means no smear campaigns.● PACs don't exist here ;)

Funding

Funding

1. No Activities Fee money shall be used for campaigning purpose.

2. No candidate for any office may spend in excess of five-hundred (500) American dollars for campaign purposes.a. No person may bribe, give, or lend anything of over twenty-five (25)

American dollars in value in order to induce a person to vote or refrain from voting, or to vote for or against a candidate or referendum.

3. All candidates must provide receipts of everything purchased for campaigning within 48 hours of distribution or usage by turning them in, via envelope with your name and Andrew ID on it, to UC Mailbox #37 at the Information Desk.

Tartan Debates

We are coordinating with The Tartan and cmuTV to get a date and will notify all executive candidates when we determine that.

Polling

Polling will occur mostly online.

Paper balloting will take place on March 28 and March 31.
