Sustainability and feasibility of the recommendations

Environmental Initiatives Short Term

Bike-friendly campuse-learningLimited shuttle bus services within campusPurchase of carbon offset credits

Long TermEnergy-efficient installationsKeycard-operated electricity systemSolar-powered infrastructure

Bike-friendly campus Promote the use of bikes in campus

Provide bike rentals to studentsInstall bike parking lots around campus

Reduce the usage of motorised transportReduce carbon footprint

Convenience for studentsTraveling after operating hours of bus servicesAvoid congestions during peak hours

Bike-friendly campus Cultivate healthy lifestyles

Cycling is a form of exercise! Potential source of revenue

Bike rental income FEASIBLE!

E-learning Transforming a significant proportion of

course delivery from class to an online format

Reduce the usage of motorised transportReduce carbon footprint

Cost savings for the universityReduced consumption of electricityReduced utilities bills

E-learning Limited reduction in carbon emissions

Students have to access course materials online

Accumulates personal carbon footprint NOT FEASIBLE!

Shuttle bus Available only during peak hours

Students are inclined to walk or cycle during non peak hours

Reduce the usage of motorised transportReduce carbon footprint

Cost savings for the universityFewer bus trips required

Shuttle bus Potential inconvenience for students

During wet weatherMitigated through the use of sheltered

walkways FEASIBLE!

Carbon offset credits A reduction in emissions of carbon dioxide or

greenhouse gases made in order to compensate for or to offset an emission made elsewhereIndirect reduction in emissions!

A dollar spent on credits ≠ a dollar spent on projects designed to reduce carbon emissionsRelatively costly!

Often little or no yield of reductions in carbon emissions

Carbon offset credits Difficulty in assessing the true value of

carbon credits Does not address the root cause of

climate change i.e. the mindset and behaviour of the masses

NOT FEASIBLE!

Key-card operated systemo Chip embedded into matriculation cardo Cuts off electricity supply whenever card

is removed from readero Similar to installations in hotels and

chaletso Switch off appliances automatically

when the room is vacant

Strengths Easy to install User friendly

1. Simply and convenient to use2. Requires no log-in 3. Requires no additional cost for the user

Weaknesses / Limitations Users may insert any card to initiate the

system if it is not well-designed to authenticate the card inserted

Physical re-wiring and renovation have to be conducted only during term break

Malfunction may be difficult to remedy and may affect progress of lessons

Students may forget to retrieve back their matriculation card

Stakeholder Interest Reduces overall carbon footprint by

conserving electricity / reduces unwanted wastage

No additional cost incured for the user Overall cost savings for the University

from the savings in electrical usage User friendly installations that is simple

to use. FEASIBLE !

Energy Efficient Installations Energy efficient Light Emitting Diodes

( LED ) and Compact Fluorescent Lights ( CFL ) bulbs.

Long-lasting and cost effective Gives off light similar to the traditional

light bulbs and fluorescent Lights. Overall energy and cost efficient in

reducing the energy consumed for lightings

Strengths

Cost and energy efficient Durable and long lasting Easy to replace and install Will not effect the usage lifestyle of

users

Weaknesses / Limitations High cost of producing such energy-

efficient installations High replacement cost to be incurred Users may not appreciate the long-term

benefits it may carry.

Stakeholder Interest Energy saving and cost efficient, aligns to

the goal of the schools to cut cost and carbon footprint

Easy to install which does not incur much indirect cost

Convenient for the end user as they operate similarily to the traditional designs and do not incur additional cost to be paid

FEASIBLE !

Solar-powered Infrastructure Leverage on the geographical location

of NTU, which is located at the peak of a hill.

Open area rooftops on buildings spacious enough to install the infrastructures

No by-products in the process of generating electricity ( Carbon and emissions free )

Strengths Minimal environmental impact that is

pollution and emission free. Convenient for the end-users as it does

not require additional efforts and cost from them

Able to provide electricity similarly to operate devices

Weakness / Limitations High start-up cost have to be incurred

for installation, technical expertise and maintenance.

May not be cost-efficient. Scale of the installations must be of a

large scale to generate sufficient electricity

Lack of solar source at night to generate electricity.

Stakeholder Interest Coincides with the NTU officials of low

startup cost and easy to install Aligns with the NTU officials and

environmentalist goals of reducing emissions and carbon footprint

Should not incur more expensive electrical bills for the end users

NOT FEASIBLE !

Executive Summary Primary objective to reduce carbon

footprint that is cost efficient as well Combinations of long term and short

term initiatives that is convenient and user-friendly for end users

Initiatives that will be beneficial to a wide arrays of stakeholders that are aligned to their interest in serving them better
