Uses of the PreteritDescribes an action or event:

1. begun at a specific time in the past

2. completed at a specific time in the past

3. narrated in succession and within a definite time in the past.

4. provides or obtains information that took place during a specific time in the past.

-AR: é, aste, ó, amos, asteis, aron

-ER: í, iste, ió, imos, isteis, ieron

-IR: í, iste, ió, imos, isteis, ieron

5. Ser vs Ir (identical, no accents)

Spelling Changes “yo”

1. Changes in the “yo” form only

A. -car-: c to qu

buscar, abarcar, acercar, aparcar, arrancar, roncar, sacar

B. -gar-: g to gu

pagar, ahogar, apagar, colgar, juzgar, llegar, pegar, rogar

C. -zar-: z to c

empezar, abrazar, almorzar, aterrizar, comenzar, cruzar, rebozar, rezar

D. -guar-: u to ü

averigar, aguar, apaciguar, atestiguar, averiguar, menguar, santiguarse

2. -yó-, -yeron- (“y” in él/ella/Ud/ Uds.)

3. -uir- (accents ONLY in yo, él/ella/Ud)

4. -ñer, -ñir, - ullir (drop the “i” for 3rd person singular and plural)
