Autoretrato. 2013óleo sobre papel65 x 50 cm

We seem to perceive time as a continuum. However, in between two perceptible moments

there is always one imperceptible.

(Jean Pierre Garnier Malet, Unfolding Theory of Time)

We are delighted to be presenting this selection of Deenesh Ghyczy’s work from different periods.

The notion of space in the work of Deenesh Ghyczy is constantly broken. The portrayed figures mix with the surrounding space and even seem to emerge from it or sink into it. They seem physically bound to the surroudings butmentally detached from it. The absentmindedness, expressed in their faces, gives the impression of acute alooness, as if the were completely absorbed by and concentrated on their emotional life. Individuals are revealed as the artist perceives the people around him, his generation, which exist in a multicultural urban environment.

Although “individual” means “indivisible”, individuality implies the illusion of being divided. In his portraits, Ghyczy divides his subjects into variousfragments. He uses consciously calculated distortions and fragmentations as a reflection of our multifaceted nature.

This deconstruction of forms leads to an optical widening of perception which can be unsettling, especially for a gaze in search of certainty and pictorial stability. As a result the constant quest of our mind for a single, coherent image is faling, which is exactly the artist’s intention.

Looking at his paintings is like entering into a spacebeyond the conventions of perception. In spite of their impossible, digitally designed structures, they uphold an almost academic sense of composition one person, a head in the middle a continuation of a thousand year old tradition. Yet the formality and structure of these images support a meditative state of self reflection; a mysterious stillness beneath the surface, a silent introspection and absorption of the persons depicted. Ghyczy establishes a specific realm of intimacy and melancholia, a state of timelessness that reflects back

on the contemplator. He makes a personal depiction of time. The presence of past, future and immediate emotion are synchronized and merged into an interval of time.

Ultimately, these displaced shapes and apparently unstable images question the truth of our empirical perception, and redirect our focus towards the soulful and singular nature of all human beings.
