200 million girls & women alive today haveundergone FGM. It is estimated that around600.000 women are living with theconsequences of FGM in Europe.

At current rates, an additional estimated 68million girls face being cut by 2030.

The consequences of the Covid19 pandemicare yet to be measured precisely, but it isestimated that 2 million more women & girlsare at risk of undergoing FGM due to thedisruption caused by the pandemic.

What is Intersectionality?

WHat does it mean for thefight against FGM? Intersectionality means we cannot addressonly one form of oppression while ignoring allthe others. If we do that, we create blind spotsin our work and it can cause certain people tobe left out.

Even worse, neglecting intersectionality canalso make us reinforce the discriminationswe are overlooking.

For example, a Black Muslim FGM-Survivor inEurope will experience forms of discriminationthat are specific to her identity, not just thesum of sexism, racism, and Islamophobia but amixture of all three. If we fight FGM without considering this, we canend up unknowingly feeding hatred towardsher and her community.

At the same time, without intersectionality, wecan unwillingly make certain people invisible.For example, FGM Survivors may also bepeople living with disabilities or peopleexperiencing other forms of Gender-BasedViolence. We must include them all in our fight.

In 2021, we will ask ourselves: whatdoes it mean to end FGM For All?

Intersectionality is an approach to feminism& social causes.

The term was created by Dr. KimberléCrenshaw and refers to a theory about howsystems of power intersect and reinforceeach other.

This means that different forms ofoppression (e.g., racism, sexism,homophobia...etc.) do not exist separately butare overlapping and affect individualssimultaneously.

Regarding feminism, it means that no oneexperiences life as "just a woman", otheraspects such as race, class, disability...etc.play a role in the forms of discrimination thatpeople are exposed to.
