Assessment in the MYP!

!7 = Excellent +!6 = Very good!5 = Good!

!

!4 = Average!3 = Below Average!1-2 = Failing!!

!

• Formative assessments are snapshots, often informal, that inform further teaching of a skill or concept != Quarter grades!!• Summative assessments are a formal judgment of a student’s mastery of a skill or concept != Semester grades!

!

Two kinds of assessments!!

!MYP grading is holistic: we look at the whole of the criterion or ATL skill . . . Strands help us to moderate consistency, generate discussion about learning!

!

!CRITERION-RELATED ASSESSMENT !

• With each assessment, determine criteria levels!

• Teachers collect one judgment each criterion at least once each quarter - many of these are formative assessments!

• Determine TRENDS . . . do not measure what a student doesn’t know, measure what she DOES know!

• Measure knowledge, understanding, skill as outlined in criteria - not behavior!

• No percentages!!

MYP!

Criterion and Strands "   B Organization

At the end of the course, students should be able to:

• create work that employs organizational structures and language-speci!c conventions throughout a variety of text types

• organize ideas and arguments in a sustained, coherent and logical manner

• employ appropriate critical apparatus.

Objectives The objectives of any MYP subject state the speci!c targets that are set for learning in the subject. They de!ne what the student will be able to do, or do better, as a result of studying the subject. The objectives of MYP language A deal with language and literature. The various language skills—listening, speaking, reading, writing, viewing and presenting—are all covered by these objectives. These objectives relate directly to the assessment criteria found in the “Language A assessment criteria” section.

Using Task Specific Rubrics!

Using Task Specific Rubrics!

If this were a Mid 1 grade what targets would you be setting yourself in order to

improve by the end of the Semester?!!

How would you start to plan to achieve these?!!!

!

• Consistency across the school!

• Alignment to the IB Learner Profile!

Approaches to Learning (ATL)!

!

Let’s unpack it !

•  5 minutes: Skim through the rubric with your child in mind.!

• What might its value be as a self-assessment tool for students?!

•  This is the school’s rubric for the ATL/Learner Profile skills and attributes. How might this tool be useful to you as a parent?!

•  5 minutes: discuss in table groups and record ideas. We’ll share thoughts . . .!

MYP and DP!

!

• Quarter, or MID grades, are grades-in-progress!

• Semester, or SEM grades, are final grades - and are determined by adding criteria results and looking at their place in the subject’s grade boundaries!

• Semester grades are not an average of the two quarters, but represent student learning of each criteria!

• ATL skills 6-12 are judged e = excellent, s = satisfactory, or n = needs improvement!

• Creativity, Action and Service (CAS) will be judged e (excellent), o (on-track), or c (concern)!
