EditorialForewordOctober30,2017(E42).Thescientificsummerof2017wasverybusy:ThisSpecialIssueisdedicatedto5conferences,theISEC2017,theCEC-ICMC2017,theIUMRS-ICAM2017,theMT-25andtheEUCAS2017.Itcontainsanumberofplenaryslidepresentationsofthe5conferences,somewithannotationstomakethembetterunderstandabletoreaderswhodidnotattendtheselivepresentations,selectedinvitedpresentationsandrunners-upoftheSNFcontestforbest-contributedpresentationattheISEC2017.Inaddition,oneScienceandTechnologyHighlightisaddedasHP127andimpressionsoftheEUCAS2017canbefoundintheEventHighlightsasHE113.EUCAS2017The13thEuropeanConferenceonAppliedSuperconductivity(EUCAS2017)tookplacethisyearinGeneva/Switzerland,organizedbytwochairmenfromthenearbyCERN.ThreeoftheimpressiveplenariesarepublishedinthisIssue.TedForganoftheUniversityofBirmingham,UK,talkedabouttheroleofchargedensitywavesinunderdopedHigh-Tcmaterials,anotherstepintryingtounderstandtheoriginofsuperconductivityinthesematerials,andMichaelEistererofATIVienna(Austria)comparedthephysicsandtechnologyofLow-TcandHigh-TcSuperconductorsandtheprospectsforapplications.PascalFebvre,oftheUniversityofSavoie,MontBlanc,France,addressedtherecentdevelopmentsinSuperconductingComputing,inwhichnotonlytheoperatingspeedplaysanimportantrole,butevenmoretheenergyefficiency–amustfornext-generationsupercomputers.AlsoavailableinthisIssue,NobuyukiYoshikawagaveaninvitedaboutrecentresearchdevelopmentsofAdiabaticQuantum-flux-parametroncircuits,evenastepinfurtherreducingtheenergyefficiencyinhigh-performancecomputing.IntheMaterialsandLargeScalerealm,respectively,recentprogressinprocessingFe-basedsuperconductingwireswasaddressedininvitedpresentationsaswellaschallengesinLTS,HTSandITERmagnettechnology.Intotal,theEUCASpartcontains3plenarycontributionsand4invitedpresentations.FurtherpresentationswillbepublishedinapreviewtoIssue43.MT-25The25thConferenceonMagnetTechnology(MT-25)tookplaceinAmsterdam/TheNetherlands.Intheplenaries,BernardBigottalkedabouttheoverallstatusoftheITERProject,AmaliaBallarinoofCERNdiscussedthedevelopmentofsuperconductorsforfutureLargeScaleApplications;JianweiLiugaveanoverviewofadvancedsuperconductorsdevelopedatWST,HisakiSakamotoofthedevelopmentofsuperconductorsatFurukawaElectricGroupandYoshiyukiIwataofthedevelopmentofCarbon-IonRadiotherapyFacilitiesattheNationalInstituteofRadiologicalSciences,NIRS.BurkhardPrauseofBrukerESTtalkedaboutdivergentexpectations:superconductorsbetweenindustrialapplications&cutting-edgescience.GregBoebingeroftheU.S.NationalHighMagneticFieldLaboratoryinTallahasseelookedintothefutureofHighMagneticFieldScienceandTechnologyandtalkedabouttheproposed60TDCmagnetand150Tnon-destructivepulsedmagnetandtherelatedmaterialsrequirements.TheplenarytalkswereclosedwithatalkofJürgenKellersoftheEcoSwingCollaborationaboutthedevelopmentofaSuperconductiveWindPowerGeneratorwithintheEcoSwingProjectandofLucaBotturaofCERNaboutHighFieldAcceleratorMagnetsasapathtonewphysics.Impressiveprogressinhigh-fieldmagnetswasreportedinanumberoftalks.Inrecentyears,magnetshavetakenahugedevelopmentstepbyintroducingHTSwiresandtapesinmagnettechnology.

Amongothers,progressintheconstructionofa43THybridMagnetatLNCMI-Grenoblewasreportedaswellasworkonapersistentcurrent1.3GHz(30.5T)NMRbyYoshiyukiIwatawashighlightedinaspecialplenarysessionforyoungscientists,bothincludedinthisIssue.Also,recentprogressinanunusualapplicationofsuperconductivitywaspresented:asuperconductinginductionheaterwithHTSmagnets.ThiscontributionisalsoincludedinthisIssue,whichintotalcontains5presentations,2ofthemannotated.IUMRS-ICAM2017The15thInternationalConferenceonAdvancedMaterialstookplaceinKyoto/Japan.Itfeatured9plenarytalkscoveringexcitingadvancedareasinmaterialscience,suchasmetaloxidesforelectronics,organicsolarcells,helicalpolymersandgraphene.Thefirstplenarylecture,“DevelopmentofSustainableSmartSocietyviaTransformativeElectronics,”wasgivenbyNobelLaureate,HiroshiAmano.TwoKeynotePresentations(oneannotated)areincludedinthisIssue.CEC-ICMC2017Becauseoftheextremelyshorttimeperiodallowedforsubmission,onlyoneplenaryandtwoinvitedpresentationsmadeitintimeforpublicationinourpreviousIssueNo.41.WearenowinapositiontoaddtwocontributionsfromtheInstituteofElectricalEngineeringofCASonmostremarkablepropertiesofMgB2wires(DongliangWangetal.)andpnictidewires(XianpingZhangetal.),respectively,manufacturedbyfairlymatureprocessingmethods.Furthermore,MitsuruIzumietal.describethedevelopmentofadvancedsuperconductingmachines,whichutilizebulkHTS-typepermanentmagnets.ISEC2017ThelastIssuecontainedalreadyanumberofplenaryandinvitedpresentationsgivenattheISEC2017inSorrento,Italy.ThisIssuepublishesthe5Runner-UppresentationsthathavealreadybeenavailableinaPreviewtothisIssue.
