Littering Issue in Edgewoodby Mark Franz, Edgewood Resident

Litter Epidemic In Edgewood-Anyone traveling along

many local roads would have to say that the amount andfrequency of littering in Edgewood neighborhoods isreaching epidemic proportions. As a member of the First

Harford Square Maintenance Staff, I take part in DAILYlitter sweeps through our community only to see thesame amount of litter we spend HOURS each day

picking up being deposited back into place almostimmediately. If there is any enforcement of littering

laws that are on the books taking place it is absolutelyineffective. Requests to have signs posted on HarfordSquare Drive notifying potential litterbugs of penalties

have been placed with Harford County Government

officials. No signs yet. Even more troubling than the lack of action is learning that laws prohibiting litter are weak and rarely enforced. An act of litter must be witnessed bya police officer in order for the litterbug to be cited. Iwould like to submit to those who design policy that avirtual fortune would flow into the Harford County

Treasury from the proceeds from litter fines just in the

Hanson Road corridor. If one or two police officers

were dedicated a few days a month to strictly writinglitter citations it would make a HUGE difference.Money out of pocket would be a major step forward

towards waking up those thoughtless enough to litter the public arena. Litter is a nationwide problem andalways has been, but our town is out of control. Lack of action to combat a problem is the seed of acceptance

that nothing can be done about it. New York Citystarted its turnaround in the 1990s by AGGRESSIVEenforcement of LITTER FINES. Even spitting on thesidewalk got the spitter fined. Folks need to beeducated that the WORLD IS NOT THEIR PERSONAL TRASH CAN. Young people need to be

taught to pocket wrappers and paper and to carry a bottle or can home or until a trash can comes along.Hey People let's remember it takes a village
