Influences

Personal: He would go to the Opera to watch ballet

dancers for his paintings He met a fourteen year old dancer that

influenced many of his paintings He liked the look of tiring women’s work He blamed the incompletion of some of his

paintings on his failing eyesight

Influences Art World:

He influenced the use of pastels Influenced impressionist painters because unlike most

impressionist painters, he did not believe in painting outdoors

He was inspired by Renaissance painters He was inspired by Japanese art and photographic

techniques He looked up to an artist called Jean Auguste

Dominique Ingres who told him to “draw lines, young man, many lines”

Influences Historical

He was not really influenced historically, but when he first started his painting career at age 18 he wanted to be a historical painter

Stylistic Traits Impressionist Realist Degas cut figures out of some paintings to create a

candid effect He tipped the stage so that he didn’t block any

dancers He would leave large, open areas to draw your eye

into the painting

Famous Art Works This image shows the trait of realism and impressionism. This image

shows realism because it shows these dancers as they would appear in real life. Although this painting is not painted outdoors like other impressionist paintings, it is still considered impressionist because it focuses on movement and light/ shadow. In a bigger form, this picture has shadows underneath the dancers

Reflection In producing this artwork I have learned how to draw

people The most challenging part was actually drawing the

artwork. The principal strength of my artwork is the elements.
