Duke Orsino:If music be the food of love, play on,Give me excess of it; that surfeiting,The appetite may sicken, and so die.

Twelfth Night Act 1, scene 1, 1–3

In 1977 Ed came to Malaspina College from the Oregon Shakespeare Festival to direct a production of Twelfth Night. I had first met Ed when he was playing Caliban in a production of The Tempest at the OSF. He was great.

The production of Twelfth Night was a hit. Hundreds of school kids were bussed in for afternoon performances, and we played to SRO crowds at night. I learned a great deal about acting, directing and living from Ed Brubaker. He has been a friend ever since.

Several of the actors in the Twelfth Night have kept in touch with Ed over the years.

Sadly Ed is now in the final stages of terminal cancer. His mind is still sharp and he and I talked recently about the warm memories we share of Shakespeare, books and life.

How far that little candle throws his beams! So shines a good deed in a weary world.
