• Using learning material everywhere and every time

• Can enhance students’engagement, increase motivation and assist active and independent learning at own pace

Why Mobile Learning?

• Mobility and multimedia capabilities of actual ordinary portabledevices like mobile phones are sufficient

• Comprises methods and techniques which are suitable for handling learning material

12 König, Kaden, Kolbe: E-Learning everywhere with podcasts – ISPRS Com VI Enschede 04/06/2010

• Suitable for m-learning to bring learning material to the user’s mobile devices

• Open for anybody to share ideas or knowledge with the world

• Can be one minute long or up to hours

Using Podcasts for Mobile Learning

• Only requires a free podcatcher program (e.g. iTunes or any desktop or mobile browser) and a media player

• After loading to the device it can be played offline, anywhere and any often

Producing Podcasts

Create Media File Write RSS Feed

Podcast

Choose appropriate audio or video format Audio Podcasts: MP3 Video Podcasts: MP4

Small file size by optimal codec, frame size, and bit rate, etc. (1MB - 200MB)

Media file need to be available on the web

Really Simple Syndication (RSS)

RSS feed is stored as text file using standardized XML

Metadata containing author, summery etc. and URL to media file

Feed file need to be available on the web

14 König, Kaden, Kolbe: E-Learning everywhere with podcasts – ISPRS Com VI Enschede 04/06/2010

• Make the RSS feed and media file available on your web server

• Check functionality by browsing your RSS feed with your internet browser

• RSS feed can be published to be available for everyone On your own web pages Or web services like iTunes

Store or iTunes U (Figure: CityGML course in iTunesStore on iPod)

Choosing Appropriate Format - Audio Settings

Bit rate Frequency rate Channels

Music in near CD-Quality 128 kbps 44,1 kHz stereo

Voice in CD-Quality 96 kbps 44,1 kHz mono

Voice in Standard Quality 64 kbps 22.05 kHz mono

MP3 standard is supported by all multimedia capable handheld devices.

Higher quality at similar bit rate are based on the Advanced Audio Codec (AAC).

Guideline for setting the parameter bit rate and frequency rate to obtain reasonable sound quality for mono or stereo MP3 files

using synthetic voice

with justifiable effort

easy to update

allowing for sustainabilityApple Store, 5th Avenue in New York, April 3, 2010

Since podcasts are available for few weeks no statements can be made concerning acceptance and success. We are confident that learning with mobile devices is particularly suitable for online training of young people.
