Abstract Design

Shading Vs. Contour Lines

Contour Lines

• Contour lines are a single line or lines that define the outer and often the inner edges and surfaces of objects or figures.

Value Creates Form

• Form is the 3-deimensional appearance of an object.

• When value is added to a drawing the contour lines disappear.

Shading Techniques • Blending: where the

graphite is smeared using your finger or a blending tool.

• Shading using Gradation: where the artist does not smear the graphite but creates different values through the amount of pressure applied to the pencil and paper.
