The second half of 2016 is an exciting time for Pushkin Press, as we publish more non-!ction, and as the Pushkin Vertigo list grows and changes its look. We are very proud to be publishing (in English for the !rst time) the war diaries of the great Astrid Lindgren: A World Gone Mad. This compassionate, intelligent and highly personal account of the Second World War has been described as ‘breathtaking’ in Germany. Another eagerly anticipated, but very different book is Browse: The World in 15 Bookshops. A collection of essays by award-winning writers (including Ali Smith, Yiyun Li and Daniel Kehlmann), this is a celebration of the greatest kind of shop in the world: the bookshop.
ONE, the imprint which brought you the Man Booker shortlisted The Fishermen (now in paperback), has another stunning novel up its sleeve: Don’t Let My Baby Do Rodeo, the extremely moving second novel from the great Boris Fishman.
Along with ‘the best Dutch novel of all time’ (there was a vote in the Netherlands, and Gerard Reve’s The Evenings won it), a book to mark the centenary of the Russian Revolution, and books from Ukraine, Spain and France, this is a list of the world’s best stories, to be read and read again.

From Denmark to Egypt, from the USA to China, Browse brings together some of the world’s leading authors to investigate bookshops both in general and in particular – the myriad pleasures, puzzles and possibilities they disclose.

She asks questions which are as keenly and dis-

What is Good, what is Evil? What do we do, when
jingoism and racism determine the thoughts and
actions of humans? How can we, as individuals,
take a stand against such malevolent forces?

Brooklyn, the summer of 2015. The city is
sweltering from another record-breaking
heatwave, accompanied by biblical rains, and
now a mysteriously glowing mushroom infes-
tation is threatening the city. As the HAZMAT
squad descends, identical twin sisters Edith, a
recently retired librarian, and Kat, a feckless
romantic, are evacuated from their terraced
house. And as the mould spreads, frightened
and bewildered New Yorkers wonder whether
this plague on all their houses is an act of
God...
Part horror story, part screwball comedy, Act of God considers what happens when our lives
– so seemingly set and ordered yet so precari-

calamity. It is, also, a novel about love found
in the most unlikely circumstances.

BEFORE THE FEASTSA(A STANI(IC
It’s the night before the Feast in the village of
Fürstenfelde (population: declining), but not
everyone is asleep. The local artist, wearing
an evening dress and gumboots, goes down to
the lake under cover of darkness. The village
archivist is kept awake by ancient tales that
threaten to take on a life of their own. A re-
tired lieutenant-colonel weighs his pistol, and
his future, in his hand. And eighteen-year-old
Anna, namesake of the Feast, prepares to take
her place in tomorrow’s drinking and dancing,
eating and burning.
On this night of misdeeds and mischief, they
are joined by a dead ferryman, a hapless
bellringer, a cigarette machine, two robbers
in football shirts and a vixen on the hunt – as
their fates collide in the most unexpected
ways.

THE PUSHKIN COLLECTION
The Pushkin Collection was redesigned in 2012, and the spare, elegant series style makes
the most of each new book’s specially commissioned cover illustration.
Designed by David Pearson and Clare Skeats, the series has a beautifully crafted arrangement
of the modern and traditional which is both con6dent and accessible (as in, for example, the
cover typeface – Johnston, a sans serif which refers, with its classical proportions, directly to inscriptions). The new template is an effective
demonstration of design being used to sensitively re6ne what already existed and what Pushkin’s
loyal readers already loved.
The Collection is typeset in Monotype Baskerville, litho-printed on Munken Premium White Paper and notch-bound by the independently owned printer TJ International in Padstow. The covers, with French
7aps, are printed on Colorplan Pristine White Paper.

^YS^]MYXSM^ONZK]^7c6aÐa, Józef Wittlin’s
short 1946 treatise on the city he left in 1922,

catastrophe of the Second World War.
Philippe Sand’s beautifully written essay pro-
vides a parallel account of the city, from his
own, very personal viewpoint.

FOUND ON THE SHELVES
The books in ‘Found on the Shelves’ have been
chosen to give a fascinating insight into the treasures that can be found while browsing in The London
Library.
Now celebrating its 175th anniversary, with over
seventeen miles of shelving and more than a million
books, The London Library has become an unrivalled
archive of the modes, manners and thoughts of
each generation which has helped to form it.
From essays on dieting in the 1860s to instructions
for gentlewomen on trout-6shing, from advice on the
ill health caused by the ‘modern’ craze of bicycling
to travelogues from Norway, they are as readable and
relevant today as they were more than a century ago.
PUBLISHED IN NOVEMBER 2016:
Through a Glass Lightly | The Right to Fly | The Noble English Art of Self-Defence | Hints on Etiquette | A Woman’s Walks | A Full Account of the Dreadful Explosion of Wallsend Colliery by which 101 Human Beings Perished!
