ITALK hosts its first ever picnic at neighboring Tianshan Park
In an effort to promote friendship and exchange between international and local students,
the ITALK Language & Culture Exchange Club has developed a range of programs and activi-
ties suitable for members of all ages and cultural backgrounds. Their most recent event took
place in Tianshan Park where the culturally diverse group of over thirty sprawled across the
field area for an exciting array of fun and games. It was the first time that ITALK took its
event to Tianshan Park for a picnic, and their size in number drew much attention from pass-
ers-by and other locals that were also in the park area basking in the final moments of sum-
mer in Shanghai. ITALKs involvement in the community will see a continued increase as or-
ganizers have already begun making plans to venture out more into the Changning districts
and mingle with the locals. Student from Myanmar interacts with a local kid at the ITALK picnic in the Park

A TALE OF THREE CITIES
ICES took its students even closer to China this fall during its Fall 2010 Cul-tural Excursion Event. This semester, students were taken on an unfor-gettable journey into three top tourist destinations: Beijing, Hangzhou, and Xi Tang. Students returned from the trips with a better understanding of their destinations culture and a deeper appreciation for the Chinese language and people. Cultural Excursions began several years ago at ICES, with small groups of students traveling to close destinations. Today, for-eign students at Donghua are given a list of travel options to choose from. See photos in PEOPLE

On the noon of October 26th, the Badminton Court on the second floor of the Donghua University Gymnasi-um on the West Yanan Road campus erupted with activity as scores of in-ternational students crowded the sidelines to cheer on their favorite teams participating in this years Dragon Cup Badminton competi-tion. The event is geared toward add-ing excitement to the tense academic
schedule at ICES, giving international students an opportunity to not only flex their muscles through athletics, but also providing them with an at-mosphere in which they can socialize with their fellow classmates. And it worked like a charm, as many stu-dents involved have agreed that the competition has brought them closer together. Altogether, 48 students from all over the world organized themselves into 16 teams and stepped onto the courts to compete for this years coveted Dragon Cup trophy. Those in attendance included ICES Vice Dean, Mrs. Song Wei and Deans Assistant, Mr. Wu Xiaojun along with other faculty, staff, and Chinese and international students.
Shortly after 1pm, the competition began. The crowd erupted with cheers as the sixteen teams went up head to head, serving their best shots to try and beat out the competition. After the initial preliminary rounds, the battle was down to the last two teams left standing Teams A1-5 and A3-2 who advanced to the finals. Nat-
urally, for teams this good, it was no easy win for either side. However, in the end, team A1-5 snatched the cov-eted Gold Dragon Cup trophy, team A3-2 followed closely behind to pick
up second place. Teams A1-2 and A1+
-2 received the Bronze trophies.
Other individual prizes went to Zhao Ning, an Italian student representing team A1-5, who was presented with the Most Outstanding Male Athlete Award, and Wang Ling from Laos received the Most Outstanding Fe-male Award. In the thunder of ap-plause and cheers, ICES Vice Dean, Mrs. Song Wei presented each awardee with their prize trophies and certificates.
Athletic events have been bringing people of all walks of life and cultural backgrounds together for thousands of years, and students at ICES have all expressed their satisfaction with the organization of this years competi-tion and their interest in getting in-volved in the next the Dragon Cup Badminton Competition.

N early three months into the semester, Im certain that most of you freshman out there probably think that learning Chinese is the most difficult
thing in the world. Surely, some of you feel like there is no silver lining at the end of this cloud, but I assure you that there is. Help is on the way. Always remember that although as adult birds, eagles soar like concords across the sky, they too needed a little push from their mothers nest. Here are a few tips to help you adjust to life here at Donghua:
1. If You Need Help, Its Probably Available. Mom and Dad may not be just down the hall anymore, but that doesnt mean you cant get help when you need it. ICES and the ISA have set up systems and programs for you. If you live on campus then you definitely need to get familiar with youre the Resident Advisor assigned to your floor. Resident Advi-sors are there to assist you with anything from medical emergencies to translation assistance. Get to know them well and foster a good relationship with the support staff in the reception area. Trust me, it will come in handy.
Having trouble with academics? ICES has hired a team of academic advisors to assist foreign students in this area. If you feel the work load is becoming overwhelming or just need to talk to someone about stuff, talk to your advisor. Get to know your teachers. You probably wont remember all their names, but if you show enough interest, Im sure theyll remember you. Always remember that teachers tend to gravitate towards students that show interest in their own education and personal development. Try avoiding be-ing labeled as a not so good student too early on in the semester. Out of mere respect, show up on time for classes and get into the lessons. Your interaction with your teachers in class will allow them to understand your learning style and may help them to teach you more efficiently. Cant fig-ure out the laundry card thing, or want a recommendation for a fun off-campus excursion? Talk to your resident advisor (RA) or someone in the ISA Office! Were always there to help out a freshman in distress. (Smile)
2. Watch Your Wallet. Its easy to get swept up in the swirl of social events and the freedom of managing your own cash, but dont get spendy too quickly! I fell victim to this when I first came to Shanghai back in 2005. I mean lets face it, westerners think (okay, maybe its just me) everything in China is cheap and we rarely stop to do the math and find out exactly how much were actually spending. But take it from someone who has already been bittenseveral times
please watch your spending. You certainly dont want to end up broke in Shanghai (like I was back then...lol). It may not be what youre used to, but try eat more cafeteria food. Its actually not that bad...compared to the other suspicious de-lights lining the streets around campus, and this is coming from someone who knows and appreciates good food.
3. Plan Your Time. One of the trickiest parts of adjusting to college is discovering how different it is from high school. Your class schedule can be different every day of the week, your teachers probably arent taking role in every class, and you might even find yourself with huge hour blocks with nothing scheduledor even entire class-free days. Building yourself a schedule can help you make time for a job, social life, study time, and all those to-do list items in between.
While youre at it, learn how to create an easy semester study calendar so you dont get (too) behind in class.
4. Get Involved. If this is your first time away from your fam-ily, friends, and everything familiar, homesickness is bound to strike at some point. Getting involved in your college com-munity can help you beat homesickness, make new friends, and (bonus) give you something new to add to your resume. Talk to your RA or stop by the ISA Office to find out what kinds of clubs, service organizations, and other activities you can get involved with on or near campus, and give a few of them a shot. And rememberbe active when it comes to meeting new people. Even the simple act of leaving your door open when youre in your room can help you get to know the other students on your floor. And do close it when youre about to go to bed. I once walked through the hall-way on my floor like really late at night and noticed a door to one of the rooms hadnt been closed. The residents were fast asleep and debris from their room had been blown into the hallway. So yeah, be friendly, but close your doors when you go to bed please. LOL!
5. Have a Little Faith. Maybe it sounds cheesy, but have a little faith in yourself. College is a big, exciting, and often overwhelming experience, so give yourself time to adjust. The campus may seem hugeespecially the Songjiang cam-pusbut you will learn your way around. The same applies for new roommates, classes, and friendships: give yourself time to learn and adjust, and be patient! All your freshman peers are feeling the pressure, too.
HELP ME! ! ! Im a freshman!

The curtains have closed on yet another successful Phoenix Cup. Under the theme My China Destiny, the competition, attracted
hundreds of students, teachers and university administrators as well as scores of reporters and personnel from the local media sce-
ne. The production of this highly anticipated annual event is supervised by the Donghua University International Cultural Exchange
School and produced entirely by the International Students Association.
Now in its fifth season, the Phoenix Cup Talent Competition has become the largest and most popular events on the universitys cal-
endar. It aims to provide international students an opportunity to discover, develop and showcase their talents along with other mu-
sic and art enthusiasts. From its humble beginnings back in the year 2007,the Phoenix Cup started out as a singing competition cen-
tered around Chinese music. Since then, it has evolved into a multi-category, mega event that has gained recognition of the universi-
ty and community at large. This years theme, My China Destiny, which rides on the heels of the recently hosted 60th Anniversary
of International Student Education in China in Beijing, gave the competition a fresh new look at how international students are using
their talents and study abroad in China experience to grow, develop and make a huge difference locally and in their home countries.
In attendance this year scores of university officials including Vice President - Prof. Helen Liu, Dir. International Cooperation
Office, Mr. Zhendong Li; International Cultural Exchange School Dean - Prof. Bohong Gu, ICES General Secretary - Mr. Lihua Yao,
other administrators, special guests, teachers and of course tons of international and local students. And for the first time in the
events history, the competition attracted the support of two major sponsorsShanghai SANY Heavy Machinery Co. Limited and
Travelzen International Travel Agency who sponsored the prizes for the first and second place winners in both the vocal and dance
categories respectively. Representatives from Shanghai Media Group (SMG), Shanghai Daily, Shanghai Morning Post, Jiefang Daily (
), and the Changning District Government Cultural Events Office were the judges for the event.
The curtains were pulled across to unveil an even larger surprise as the Donghua University International Students Chamber Choir
thrilled the audience with their splendid rendition of the famous Chinese song Singing the same tune. Even before the roar of ap-
plause from the audience had a chance to dilute into silence, the contestants ascended the stage in pairs to the tune of a BET style
rap performed by the able Simba from Kenyawho dedicated the rap to the theme of the event. Other guest performers included a
short stage drama delivered by students in the English Department of the School of Foreign Languages over at our sister campus in
the Songjiang University Town. Contestant after contestant, the evening continued to echo the passion and excitement of foreign
students living their dreams in China. From exotic dances from the South Pacific and country style music from the Southern United
States to a full on live band and a mesmerizing reincarnation of the chart-topping hit Bad Romance by the sexy Mongolian trio that
graced our stage last year, the entire event was an electrifying musical and artistic experience that no one will ever forget.
At the end of the evening, Mumbi Kuguru from Kenya walked away with the top prize for the vocal category after her stunning per-
formance of Ave Maria as made famous by the one and only Beyonce, and The South Pacific Dancers took home the top prize for
the dance category.
The evening was brought to a close with an inspiring speech by Donghua University Vice President, Professor Helen Liu, who encour-
aged students to continue to be good ambassadors for their countries in China, and use their talents to enrich their study abroad ex-
perience at Donghua University. After her remarks, Class A3-3 broke out into a unexpected college cheerleading dance routine to
bring the evening to a close.
