ldquoAs a photographer I am drawn to light rather than to the object it illuminates My work
begins with a photo that captures reflected translucent or diffused light I transform
that image to produce an unfamiliar view of the familiar For this show for example I
created compositions from photos of a beam of light on a lawn at night early morning
sunlight on the wall in a church and reflected light on a polished aluminum elevator door I use photographic software to reconstruct my photos experimenting with
shape color and the qualities of light My goal is to create unexpected compositions
that evoke mystery and engage the viewerrsquos imagination
Beside each framed composition in the exhibit is a card showing the photo that
served as raw material for that composition I encourage viewers to search for
elements of the photo that appear in the final compositionrdquo

False Light
September 1st-November 30th
Artist Statement These pieces are my response to the
false light cast on the marches
protests and solidarity gatherings I
attended over the past year By focusing on shock moments the media cheated
the public from an accurate view of
these events
This is digital art My snapshots of
crowds and individuals are meshed with
photos of splattered paint and plant-life
and reworked to reflect what I witnessed a resilient side of humanity and the
organic rise of a genuine citizenry

PAUL PALETTI GALLERY THAT MUCH FURTHER WEST
That Much Further West Three Visions from New Mexico Kirk Gittings Jan Pietrzak and Philip V Augustin
July 7th ndash September 30th 2017 Reception September 14th 5-8PM
The Paul Paletti Gallery is pleased to bring a trio of New Mexican photographers to Louisville for our summer show Kirk
Gittings Jan Pietrzak and Philip Augustin all specialize in black and white photography
Kirk Gittings has resided in New Mexico for 57 years and has been a dedicated photographer since 1970 His commercial
architectural photographs have appeared on over 150 magazine covers and in 95 books while his black and white
photography is represented in 27 museums institutions and other collections Kirkrsquos work has been shown in over 120
exhibitions including his 30 year retrospective at the Paul Paletti Gallery in 2003 He is contributing faculty at both the
Chicago Art Institute and the Santa Fe University of Art and Design
Jan Pietrzak is a college educator and fine art photographer specializing in the Xtreme contact print process known as
PlatinumPalladium Printing He received his formal education from La Verne College and attended the Ansel Adams
Workshop in Yosemite CA in 1974 He currently lives outside Santa Fe
Philip V Augustin lives and works in Santa Fe New Mexico He has nearly 40 years experience and strong roots in the
classic West Coast style of black and white photography Philiprsquos recent abstract work has been widely exhibited and was
featured at the New Mexico Musuem of Art in 2016 He is contributing faculty at the Santa Fe University of Art and Design and has worked as a Curatorial Consultant for the Georgia OrsquoKeeffe Musuem
These three photographers represent very diverse approaches to photography
- Kirk Gittingsrsquo work is in the tradition of large format black and white photographers like Ansel Adams and Edward Weston
but with unique style and vision that celebrates the rugged romanticism of the New Mexico landscape through elegant
technical mastery of traditional and contemporary photographic processes
- Jan Pietrzakrsquos work with platinum printing explores the use of this antique process and how it integrates with the light and imagery of the landscape His work consists of small and intimate contact prints with an extreme tonal range unique to
platinum printing
- Philip Augustin uses light and shadow to create ambiguity and challenge the viewer to see beyond the subjectrsquos physical
form This selection of work includes his bold minimalist images of architectural subjects dynamic gestural close-ups and
his most recent work in which he frees the objects he photographs from their relationship with our visual reality
