The Common Core
What is Common Core?
The Common Core State Standards provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn.
The standards are designed to be robust and relevant to the real world, reflecting the knowledge and skills that our young people need for success in college and careers.
College and Career Readiness First, the Common Core State Standards
Initiative presents a common definition of the knowledge and skills necessary for students to be “ready for college and career.”
Second, with this definition of college and career readiness in mind, the Common Core State Standards Initiative provides the most significant state-led effort to establish K–12 standards based on empirical evidence and research.
What are performance based assessment? Performance assessments are ways to
measure students’ knowledge and skills that go beyond asking them to answer multiple-choice or fill-in-the-space questions.
Typically, students are asked to complete a hands on task that can take 40 minutes or can be completed over several class periods.
For example, students might be asked to research and write a magazine article or to conduct and explain the results of a scientific experiment.”
Type of Assessments
Construct-Centered performance assessments are intended to tap into and sample from a domain of skills and competencies.

Lexile Framework The Common Core State Standards Initiative
places a strong emphasis on the role of text complexity in evaluating student readiness for college and careers.
The proportion of texts that students read each year should come from a particular text complexity grade band. Students must also show a steadily increasing ability to discern more from and make fuller use of text. Lexile Framework
