Disrupting Biological Rhythms AO1

• Write down all you know about the disruption of biological rhythms

• Add your name and then swap papers

• Mark the work based on the following success criteria

Success criteria = Max 80 marks

Mentions jet lag = 5 pointsExplains jet lag = 10 points

Mentions shift work = 5 pointsExplains shift work = 10 points

Mentions DSPS = 5 pointsExplains DSPS = 10 pointsKey terms = 5 points each

(Circadian rhythm, oscillators, SCN, melatonin, phase delay, phase advance, desynchronisation)

• Excellent = 50-80 points

• Good = 30-49 points

• Average = 15-29 points

• Needs work = 0-14 points

Objectives

• The Big Question….– Discuss the disruption of biological rhythms (8+16)

• AO1 topics– Jet Lag– Shift work– Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome

• What do think you need to be able to do for the AO1 part of this question?

Disruption of biological rhythms

• So far we have found out that biological rhythms are controlled by endogenous pacemakers or oscillators.

• Some of these oscillators can easily be reset by exogenous zeitgebers, whereas others are more resistant.

• This means that sometimes, our oscillators can become desynchronised – out of time with each other.

How are our circadian rhythms disrupted?

• Our circadian rhythms can be subject to;– Phase advance – e.g. having to get up earlier than

usual – Phase delay – e.g. going to bed later than usual

• Which do you think is easiest to deal with?

• Why?

What are the consequences of disrupting biological rhythms?

• Today, you will be looking at three of these:– Jet Lag– Shift Work– Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome

• You will be responsible for finding out about the effects of one disruption, and teaching this to others.

• You need to fill in your sheets as you go along

How did you do?

Consider your progress…

• How do your results compare?

• If you made progress from last time, how did you do it?

• If you did not make progress from last time, what could you do differently next time?

The Big question…

Discuss the disruption of biological rhythms (8+16)

• You have already completed the AO1 for this

• Today you need to gather the AO2

Disrupting biological rhythms AO2

• Using your hand outs and planning grids you should work in pairs to get the AO2 for disrupting biological rhythms together.

• Remember to work on tying up those implications

• These need to be linked to the question and the point in your MRI paragraph
