ORDER OF CARMELITES
Almighty and Ever living God, we adore you, we praise you
and we thank you. You chose many and consecrated to be
partakers of your Redemptive plan from eternity. We thank
you, for choosing our General Delegation as part of it. We
are grateful to you for the way you care our Delegation. We
acknowledge our human frailties and ask your forgiveness
for our offences and omissions. Bless us, Lord, to love and
serve one another and to forgive each other in our weak-
nesses. Help us with your Spirit to seek our sole goal Jesus
and to find you on the Mount. Grant us the courage to face
all problems with optimism and enthusiasm in all our situ-
ations, especially in our moments of failures and crisis. Lead
us Lord, in the path of sanctification and purification by our
daily Eucharistic celebrations, prayers and works of charity
and justice. We offer all members and candidates of our
Delegation to your infinite love and immense compassion.

“I will always thank you God, for what you have done; in the presence of yourpeople, I will proclaim that you are good”
(Ps 52:9)
I am immensely happy to publish this Directory of our GeneralDelegation. Our General Delegation is celebrating 10th anniversaryof its birth. God has been guiding us throughout these years with Hisspecial love and compassion. We recall with gratitude all who havehelped us and who continue to help us in our journey. By Gods graceand with the help of many generous and fervent people, ourDelegation is growing steadily.
Communication is vital to any Organization. It is the sign ofcommunion. Authority can only accomplish its purpose if everyonestrives together to build the common good, especially through mutualcommunication (Carmelite Cons. 207). It is a matter of great joy that weare members of an Ancient Order that has a rich, spiritual heritage. This identity shall help all members to go ahead with much joy andzeal as our Father prophet Elijah.
I wish to thank all those who have worked to realize this directory. In avery special way I wish to appreciate and congratulate Rev. Bro. TitusRancy O.Carm for his special interest and untiring effort to bring outthis directory. I wish and pray that this edition of the directory shallhelp in many ways especially in communication and evangelization.May God continue to bless us and our Blessed Mother, Queen ofCarmel and our Patrons St. Therese of Lisieux and St. Albert ofJerusalem and all other saints intercede for us.
I dedicate this Directory to Saint Teresa of Calcutta who is raised tothe order of Saints and who is an example for prayer and action.
Fr. Kuriakose Chandanaparambil O.CarmDelegate GeneralSeptember 05, 2016
HISTORY
The earliest recorded history we have of the Carmelite Order dates back to thethirteenth century. Some time between 1206 and 1214, St. Albert, Patriarch ofJerusalem, had been asked by a group of hermits living on Mount Carmel, for arule of life. The hermits were ordinary laymen, most of whom had come to theHoly Land on Crusades, who wanted to seek God in solitude and silence. Theysettled on Mount Carmel because of its beauty and link to the Old Testamentprophet, Elijah. The hermits also took Mary, the Mother of Jesus, for their model. They even dedicated their chapel on Mount Carmel in her honor. So devotedwere they to the Blessed Virgin that their official name became “The Brothers ofthe Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel,” or Carmelites.
The Rule of St. Albert was approved by Pope Honorius III in 1226, and again byPope Gregory IX in 1229 and rule was then promulgated with certain modificationsby Pope Innocent IV in his 1247 Bull Quem honorem Conditoris. By this time, the Carmelites were forced to leave Palestine for political reasons and they fledto different parts in Europe. They began to develop ministries in keeping withtheir new status as mendicant religious. The fifteenth and sixteenth centuriesare famous for various religious reforms that tried to return the different Ordersto their original spirit. Through the years, many friars tried to reform the CarmeliteOrder. They wanted to return to the original spirit and way of life as lived onMount Carmel: eremitical and prayerful. Some of the most famous early reformmovements are the Mantuan reform, which began in Italy, the Callastine reform, which was begun by Bl. John Soreth, and the Touraine reform. The reformmovement led by a Spanish Carmelite nun, St. Theresa of Avila paved way forthe formation of Discalced Carmelites by the end of 16th Century. By the middleof the 17th century the Carmelites had reached their zenith. In the followedcenturies, Carmelites faced serious threats including Black Death, Frenchrevolution, suppression of Religious Orders in different countries and so on. Butthe 20th century witnessed a rebirth of the Order with a flourishing number ofvocations.

In December 2006, the Prior General of the Carmelite Order, Fr. JosephChalmers, received a request from a group of members of the South KeralaProvince of the Discalced Carmelites (O.C.D.) in India who wished to passover to the Order of Carmelites (O.Carm) to form a new unity to flourish therich Carmelite spirituality. Following a careful evaluation with the General Councilof the reasons for the request, and a lengthy exchange with the then ProvostGeneral of the Discalced Carmelites, Fr. Luis Aróstegui Gamboa, the twoSupreme Moderators, in accordance with the Code of Canon Law, grantedpermission to the group to pass over to the Carmelite Order, following a trialperiod. Given the exceptional nature of the request by such a large number, the two Supreme Moderators sought and obtained reassurances from theCongregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life (CIVCSVA).
The unit was specially entrusted to the patronage of St. Therese of Lisieux andSt. Albert of Jerusalem. They were given the holy habit and the constitutions ofthe Order by its Prior General Most Rev. Joseph Chalmers on 6th May 2007during the solemn Eucharistic celebration presided over by His Excellency Rt.Rev. Dr. Francis Kallarakkal, the Bishop of Kottappuram. Rev. Fr. Sedric D’Cruzwas appointed the Special Delegate of this unit by the General Council. Themembers of the unit were sent to the different communities of the CarmeliteOrder to have community experience as part of the probation.
In February 2011 Rev. Fr. Anthony Scerri O.Carm of the Australian provincewas appointed as the Special Delegate General and was sent to India. Hehelped the members of the unit to do a more intense preparation for the SolemnProfession. On 5th November 2011, the Prior General Most Rev. Fr. FernandoMillan Romeral O.Carm received the Solemn Profession of 19 friars atCarmelaram Priory, Parur. This group was canonically erected as GeneralDelegation of St. Therese and St. Albert of the Order of the Carmelites and itwas officially declared on 6th November 2011 at Carmelaram Priory by thePrior General during the Solemn thanksgiving Mass presided over by His GraceMost Rev. Dr. Francis Kallarakkal, Archbishop of Verapoly in the presence of

Rt. Rev. Dr. Joseph Karikkassery, the Bishop of Kottapuram and Rt. Rev. Dr.Varghese Chakkalakkal, the Bishop of Kannur. Fr. Kuriakose Chandanaparambilwas appointed its Delegate General and Frs. Manuel Karippote and Jacob Mendezwere appointed as the Councillors of the delegation.
God continues to bless the Delegation with a number of zealous vocations. At therequest of the Prior General of the Order, St. Thomas Province of the Order (Syro-malabar rite) welcomes the novices of the Delegation and prepares them to embracethe Carmelite life very lovingly and generously. The Delegation is always gratefulto Rev. Fr. Sojan Neendoor, the former Provincial and Rev. Fr. Robert Puthussery, present Provincial, and to all the members of St. Thomas Province for the fraternalaccompaniment and loving encouragement.
Today the General Delegation has four communities, three in India and one inIreland. It has 33 professed members of which 20 are in solemn vows and another38 young men in the initial formation. The members are very much involved invarious pastoral, educational and social ministries. Some of our members aredoing their ministries in Italy, Ireland and in Germany. The Delegation also runs asmall school, Chris Cappell, at Parur to impart better education to the poor studentsof the locality. The Delegation is also looking forward to have its presence in NorthIndia by 2018.
The Delegation is going to complete 10 years of its existence in 2017. God hasbeen guiding the Delegation in marvellous and mysterious ways. The members ofthe Delegation do thank Rev. Fr. Fernando Millan, the Prior General and his Councilfor their continuous support and guidance. The General Delegation will alwaysremain grateful to all who guide and help and to all who have been instrumental toform this new unit, especially to Most Rev. Fr. Joseph Chalmers O. Carm, theformer Prior General of Carmelites and Very Rev. Fr. Luis Arostegui OCD, theformer Superior General of the Discalced Carmelites for their mutual consent andapproval. The members look ahead letting themselves be fully at the mercy ofGod trusting in His infinite love and immense compassion.
