• INTRODUCTION:
• DILLI HAAT IS A PROJECT OF DELHI TOURISM & NEW DELHI MUNICIPAL CORPORATION; IT PROVIDES AN
AMBIENCE OF A TRADITIONAL VILLAGE MARKET FOR MORE CONTEMPORARY NEEDS. IT PROVIDES A
SYNTHESIS OF CRAFT, FOOD AND CULTURAL ACTIVITIES.
• THE 6 ACRES OF LAND ON WHICH THIS SPRAWLING COMPLEX IS SITUATED WAS SALVAGED AS PART OF A
RECLAMATION PROJECT AND TRANSFORMED INTO A MAGNIFICENT DREAM PLAZA.
• DILLI HAAT IS NOT JUST A MARKET PLACE; IT HAS BEEN VISUALIZED AS A SHOWPIECE OF TRADITIONAL
INDIAN CULTURE- A FORUM WHERE RURAL LIFE AND FOLK ART ARE BROUGHT CLOSER TO AN URBAN
CLIENTELE.
• THESE SHOPS CHANGE HANDS EVERY 15 DAYS AND THEREFORE PROVIDE OPPORTUNITY TO THE
VISITORS WITH A DIFFERENT SET OF SHOPS PERIODICALLY AND THEREFORE MOTIVATES THEM TO KEEP
REVISITING AGAIN AND AGAIN.

THE OVER ALL AREA AVAILABLE WAS
APPROXIMATELY 100M X 300 M. THE SITE
ITSELF POSED UNUSUAL CONSTRAINTS LIKE
THE NALLAH RUNNING THROUGH THE ENTIRE
LENGTH . THE NALLAH WAS COVERED WITH
R.C.C. SLAB BUT IT WAS NOT ALLOWED TO
CONSTRUCT ANY STRUCTURE OVER IT AS IT
NO T BEEN DESIGNED TO TAKE SUCH LOADS.
THIS RESULTED IN PLANNING OF BUILDING
TOWARDS THE PERIPHERY. THE TWO SIDES
OF THE NALLAH HAD BEEN FILLED UP WITH
SOIL, NECESSITATING FOUNDATION AS MUCH
AS 8M DEEP.

DISPLAY AND SO ON.

• SPECIAL STORES HAVE BEEN PROVIDED FOR TEMPORARY SHOPS WHERE CRAFTSMEN STORE THEIR
GOODS AT NIGHT
• TROLLEYS FOR TRANSPORTING GOODS TO THE STORES HAVE BEEN PROVIDED
• SHUTTERS MADE OF BAMBOO MATS ARE USED FOR CLOSING THE SHOPS
• AT MANY PLACE, THE SHOPS AE PLACED IN A ROW, WHILE AT MANY OTHERS THEY OCCUR IN FORM
OF CLUSTERS. THIS IS DUE TO TOWERING EUCALYPTUS TREES THAT LINED THE SITE.

KOTA STONE FLOORING AND FLAT R.C.C. ROOF .
• THERE ARE 52 FOOD STALLS IN WHOLE PLAZA, WITH EACH ONE
SPECIALIZING IN THE FOODS OF A PARTICULAR STATE, THERE BY
PROVIDING FOOD FROM ALL STATES
• SINCE LOTS OF SPACE WAS REQUIRED FOR HAVING SO MANY

• THE FRONT FACADE OF DIFFERENT BLOCKS ARE GIVEN
DIFFERENT TREATMENTS IN FORM OF TRADITIONAL ARTS OF
THEIR STATE. THE COUNTER IS GIVEN A TREATMENT OF MOSAIC
THAT DEPICTS THE CULTURE OF THE STATE .

• A SMALL PERFORMING ARTS THEATRE ENDS THE VISTA.
• STAGE HAS A CIRCULAR FORM AND THERE IS ADEQUATE BASK STAGE SPACE
AVAILABLE BUT THE FRONT SPACE FOR VISITORS IS VERY LESS.
• THERE IS A CENTRAL 10’-O” WIDE WALKWAY TOWARDS STAGE FROM FRONT
ENTRANCE WHICH IS IDENTIFIED BY 4 RICHLY CARVED WOODEN COLUMNS.
• THIS AREA IS SEPARATED FROM SURROUNDING ACTIVITIES WITH BAMBOO
STICKS.

THE FIRST DILLI HAAT (ALSO DESIGNED BY THIS OFFICE) OPENED IN THE SOUTH-CENTRAL PART OF DELHI IN
1994. HUGELY SUCCESSFUL -- IT ATTRACTS OVER A MILLION VISITORS A YEAR – IT WAS THE FIRST EXERCISE IN
PLACE MAKING IN THE CITY OF DELHI, NEARLY 80 YEARS AFTER EDWIN LUTYENS PLANNED NEW DELHI IN THE
EARLY TWENTIETH CENTURY.
THE FEATURED PROJECT – THE DILLI HAAT AT PITAMPURA IN NORTHWEST DELHI -- IS THE SECOND SUCH CRAFTS
MARKET. IT WAS COMMISSIONED AFTER THE SUCCESS OF THE FIRST AND OPENED IN APRIL 2008. ITS BUILDING
PROGRAMME WAS ALSO DEVELOPED BY THE DESIGN STUDIO. THIS INCLUDED INTEGRATING DIVERSE ISSUES
LIKE RECREATIONAL, EDUCATIONAL AND CULTURAL USES OF THE SPACE WITHIN ITS HISTORICAL CONTEXT.
THE PROJECT IS LOCATED ON A CORNER SITE IN THE VICINITY OF THE SUBHASH PLACE BUSINESS DISTRICT
AND THE METRO STATION. THE MAIN HAAT IS SET BACK FROM THE STREET AND IS ACCESSED BY A PUBLIC
PLAZA THAT LINKS TO THE METRO STATION AND THE BUSINESS DISTRICT. THE PLAZA HAS BEEN DESIGNED AS A
RECREATIONAL SPACE AND INCLUDES A PLAY AREA FOR CHILDREN INTEGRATED WITH THE ADJOINING
STREET.

CONCEPT: THE DESIGN OF THE PROJECT
WAS SHAPED BY TWO GOALS.
• THE FIRST WAS TO CREATE AS
SPACE TRTHET IS HUMANE
AND RESPECTS THE NEEDS
OF ALL USERS- BOTH
VISITORS AND THE
CRAFTPEOPLE WORKING IN
THE HAAT.
• THE SECOND WAS TO
ESTABLISH A BENCHMARK IN
THE DESIGN OF SIMILAR
PUBLIC SPACE IN THE CITY.
SITE CONDITION: THE OVER ALL AREA AVAILABLE
WAS APPROXIMATELY 2.9

POSED THE GIGANTIC TV TOWER
JUST BEHIND IT, ATTACHED TO
THE REAR PORTION OF THE SITE.
IT WAS NOT ALLOWED TO
CONSTRUCT ANY HIGH
STRUCTURE DUE TO RAYS OF TV
TOWER.
THE DELHI METRO ON THE FRONT
SIDE PASSING ABOVE THE HAAT. IT
WAS NOT ALLOWED TO CONSTRUCT
ANY HIGH STRUCTURE DUE TO THE
METRO BRIDGE. THE AREA BELOW
THE METRO BRIDGE WAS INITIALLY
THE AREA AS GREEN AREA AND
SITTING. TWO COLUMN OF METRO
ARE INCLUDED IN THE SITE.
THE EXISTING SITE UNDER THE
METRO BRIDGE WAS ALSO INCLUDED
TO UTILIZE THE AREA AND MAINTAIN
GREEN. APPROVAL FROM METRO
WAS TAKEN FOR THIS.
THE PROJECT HAS NEARLY 100 CRAFTS STALLS, FOOD
COURTS, A SPICE MARKET, AN ART GALLERY, AN
AMPHITHEATRE, A RESTAURANT AND CONFERENCE
FACILITY. THE BUILDINGS ARE SINGLE-STORIED AND
BUILT AROUND LANDSCAPED COURTS AND PLAZAS. THE
FRONT PART OF THE HAAT HAS BEEN ELEVATED TO
PROVIDE A PARKING SPACE FOR AROUND 350 VEHICLES.
A ROAD ALONG THE PERIMETER OF THE SITE PROVIDES
ACCESS TO SUPPORTING INFRASTRUCTURE THAT
INCLUDES A DORMITORY FOR VISITING CRAFTSPEOPLE.
SITE ANALYSIS: • USE OF DIFFERENT SHAPES OF BLOCK TO SHOW DIVERSITY
• AN CENTRAL AXIS OF SYMMETRY IS CREATED STARING FROM THE TV TOWER TO THE ENTRANCE, ALONG WHICH MIRROR IMAGES OF THE BLOCKS ARE
PLACED.
THE BUILDINGS, CONSTRUCTED IN EXPOSED BRICK AND STONE, WITH SHADY
VERANDAHS HAVE BEEN INSPIRED BY THE VERNACULAR ARCHITECTURE OF THE
REGION. THE UPPER LEVEL PLAZA BUILDINGS HAVE VAULTED GREEN ROOFS – A
DESIGN FEATURE USED FOR THE FIRST TIME IN A PUBLIC SPACE IN THE CITY. THE
GREEN ROOFS AND PLAZAS ARE IRRIGATED WITH RECYCLED WATER PRODUCED
BY AN ONSITE SEWAGE TREATMENT PLANT.
THE PROJECT IS A BARRIER-FREE ENVIRONMENT AND IS BUILT ON PRINCIPLES OF
UNIVERSAL DESIGN.

SHOPPING MARKET A LINEAR LANE AND SHOPS ON BOTH SIDES
LIKE DILLI HHAT INA WOULD HAVE BEEN A BETTER OPTION.
THE 2ND HALF OF THE CONSISTING THE O.A.T AND THE FOOD
STALLS IS NIETHRE VISUALLY NOR PHYSICALLY PROPERLY
CONNECTED.

THE SELECTION OF MATERIAL, CONSTRUCTION AND LAYOUT WAS MADE TO
MAXIMIZE THERMAL EFFICIENCY AND MINIMIZE ENERGY CONSUMPTION. NEARLY
ALL AREAS ARE ILLUMINATED BY NATURAL DAYLIGHT AND ARE NATURALLY
VENTILATED. THE BRICK AND STONE USED IN THE PROJECT HAVE BEEN SOURCED
FROM THE SURROUNDING REGION. MATERIALS WERE SELECTED FOR THEIR
DURABILITY AND ENDURING QUALITIES. THE BUILDING VOCABULARY HAS BEEN
KEPT UNDERSTATED AND THE SCALE INTIMATE TO ENSURE THAT THE BUILDINGS
DO NOT OVERWHELM THE CRAFTS BEING SOLD.
