Background: Diego Velasquez was born on June 6, 1599

in Seville, Spain.

A Spanish painter in the court of King Philip IV.

He was an artist during the Baroque period.

Painted mostly still life, portraits, and religious pieces.

King Philip IV:

Early Life: Juan Rodríguez de Silva and Jerónima

Velázquez.

Velázquez was educated by his parents.

Received good training in language and philosophy, but showed an early gift for art.

Juan Rodríguez de Silva:

Francisco de Herrera: A vigorous painter who disregarded the

Italian influence of the early Seville school.

Velázquez studied art with him for one year.

He learned to use different paint brushes with long bristles from Herrera.

Artwork: Velasquez’s artwork fell into the

category of Bodegón.

Bodegón comprised everyday subjects combined with still life, portraits, and religious scenes.
