Why / What / When

So far the coverage maps provided tell you the amount of floats as well as their age per box.

float density

The coverage maps provided tell you the amount of floats as well as their age per box.

DEPLOYMENT TOOL

float age

Why / What / When

Spatial (as well as temporal) variability is strongly dependent of location.

-Fronts and currents have a very small spatial scale-interior gyres have large spatial scale

Why / What / When

For monitoring the oceans with Argo floats the constant resupply of float into the oceans need to be assured.

The location of deployment is influenced by:

-Density of floats in the area (6x6° box)-Age of floats in the area (6x6° box)-Expected drift out of area

For additional scientific deploys:

-expected spatial variability-expected temporal variability

DEPLOYMENT TOOL

Just a couple of floats in a homogenic area can sample that region well!

Several floats on one side of a front/current do not represent the other side!

How to sample this ocean best?

Why / What / WhenHow to take the different spatial and temporal variability in the oceans into account? What is an ideal distribution of floats to sample active regions “good enough”?

DEPLOYMENT TOOL

Why / What / When

Other mappings are done by different groups already.

float densities

Why / What / When

There is NOT one way, but MANY!

Depending on interest, focus and location different density mappings are likely to be desired.

The MATLAB routine under development is doing the following!

DEPLOYMENT TOOL

Why / What / When

The MATLAB routine under construction is doing the following:

-Automatically acquiring latest float location and age from the internet (Optional can be fed with a personal distribution)

-f/H weighted mapping of float density and age-Streamline following weighted mapping of float density and age-Climatologically isopycnal weighted mapping of float density and age

Any combination of the above!Easy Graphical User Interface to adjust strength of weights in influence and cutoff radius as well as weighting function.Output maps as JPG or PDF.

DEPLOYMENT TOOL

Why / What / WhenWhat else?

-Possibility to add “virtual” floats and re-plot maps – to check impact of different deployment positions.

-Possibility to draw map 1 year ahead -> take out floats that are already ‘on the edge’

-Possibility to compare any map with 6x6° map

LATER as well:

-Possibility to calculate 1 year ahead the (mean/median) deplacement of floats and the expected coverage.-Suggest float positions within a boundary box given

DEPLOYMENT TOOL

Why / What / When

A weighted mapping on what other parameters would help YOU to decide where to deploy a float?

-surface heat flux?

-buoyancy

-oxygen

DEPLOYMENT TOOL

Why / What / When

NOW-data download and mapping on f/H with any parameters available NOW-Isopycnal weighted mapping available NOW

About 1 month from now:-Graphical User Interface (GUI) to be done next! (as soon as that is partly functional I will make the routine available in BETA version for constant testing and further ideas!

After that:-allow a combination of f/H, density, streamfunction, so far only separate-Streamline weighted mapping: which climatological streamfunction to take?-Virtual float input // -…

Special wishes for order of importance? General Ideas?

No mapping can represent all areas well. From knowing the area and personal preferences you have to decide what is the best mapping.

This tool is mend to provide you - based on the up to date coverage - with maps that can aid you to decide where to deploy your floats.

Personal opinion:(Rather to be used in large gyre scale regions than globally or small scale.)
