5. FacultyPrioritiesandGovernance–(PamPropsom)A. TheGovernanceCommitteegivesadvancenoticeoftheirintenttoaskthefacultytoaddasentence

tothedescriptionofthecommitteeintheAcademicHandbookrequiringthePresidentandVicePresidentforAcademicAffairstomeetregularlywiththecommittee.TheexactlanguagecanbefoundinAppendixB.

RationaleTokeeplinesofcommunicationopenbetweenthefacultyandtheadministration,FacultyPrioritiesandGovernancehasfounditvaluabletomeetwiththeregularlywiththePresidentandVicePresidentforAcademicAffairs.Whenthegovernancerestructuringwasproposedinspring2015weoriginallylistedthePresidentandVicePresidentforAcademicAffairsasexofficiomembersofthecommittee,however,thefacultyamendedtheproposaltostrikethoseadministrativemembersgivingthecommitteetheabilitytomeetwithoutsenioradministrators.AddinglanguagetotheBy-lawsrequiringthecommitteetomeetwithourtwosenioracademicadministratorscodifiesabestpracticeforsharedgovernance.ThismotionhasbeendiscussedwithandissupportedbythePresidentandVice-PresidentforAcademicAffairs.TherewerenoquestionsforFacultyPrioritiesandGovernance.WrittenAnnouncements–none6. RationaleNeuroscienceisaninterdisciplinarysciencethatrepresentsthesynthesisofknowledgefromthelifesciences(biology,kinesiology,psychology),physicalsciences(chemistry,physics),computationalsciences(computerscience,mathematics),socialsciences(anthropology,education,sociology),andhumanities(philosophy).Thefieldofneurosciencehasexperiencedsignificantgrowthoverthelastfewdecades.DePauwiswellpositionedtodevelopaNeurosciencemajor,andtheDepartmentofPsychologybroughtaproposalforwardtoCurricularPolicyandPlanning,whoendorsestheproposal.TheinterdisciplinarynatureofNeurosciencemeansthatthedevelopmentofamajorshouldbecosteffectivewhileatthesametimeenhancingthestatureoftheuniversity.Nearlyallofthecourseworkrequiredtoimplementthenewmajoralreadyexistacrosstheuniversitycurriculum,sotheneedtocreatenewcoursesislimited.Therewerenoclarifyingquestions.B. CurricularPolicyandPlanninggivesadvancenoticeofitsintenttoaskthefacultytovoteonanew

minorinstatisticsattheApril2016Facultymeeting.Asynopsisoftherationaleforanewminor,thelistofcoursesandcataloglanguagecanbefoundinAppendixD.

RationaleTheDepartmentofMathematicsiscurrentlyofferingMajorsinMathematics,MajorinActuarialScience,andMinorinMathematics.TheDepartmenthasinvestedasignificantamountoftimetodevelopandtoofferseveralstatisticscourses.TheDepartmentbelievesitisnowtimetoaddaconcentrationinstatisticsat

thelevelofaminor.Indevelopingtheproposal,thedepartmentfollowedtheguidelinesforundergraduateminorsandconcentrationsinstatisticalscience(see,Cannonetal.2012,fullreferenceinAppendixD).TheproposedMinorinStatisticswillprovidestudentswithastrongbackgroundofmathematicalandstatisticalsciencesasfoundationsfornovelstatisticalmodelinganddataanalysis.TheMinorinStatisticscurriculumisdesigned:(a)toprovideastronggeneralbackground,boththeoreticalandapplied,inmathematicalandstatisticalsciences,and(b)topreparestudentsforcareersinquantitativeareasthatrequirenovelstatisticalmodelinganddataanalysis.Therewerenoclarifyingquestions.C. RemarksfromthePresident(BrianCasey)IofferabriefupdateonanumberofUniversitymatters.First,IwantedtothankthemanyfacultymemberswhowereoncampusthisweekendforthevariousadmissionseventsrelatedtotheHonorsandFellowsWeekend.Wehadthelargestsuchweekendwehaveeverseen.Ifthepastisanymeasurethesestudentstypicallyshowthehighestlevelofacademicachievementandproclivitytoenroll,soagoodHonorsandFellowsWeekendisalwaysagoodthing,sothankyouagaintothemanyfacultyhereonSunday.Theadmissionsseasongenerallygoeswell.Whileapplicationsaredownabit,wewillstillreportoneofourtwothreeoffourhighestapplicationyearsever.CurrentlytheGPAandtestscoresofthoseadmittedarerunninghigherthanlastyear.Encouraginglyhavealsoseena15%increaseinapplicationsfromdomesticstudentsofcolor.

It’sstillveryearlytopredictseasonalresults,butIknowthatCindyhasaverygoodoperationoverinAdmissions.Wewillseeanincreaseinneed-basedaidthisyeargiventhenumberofgiftstoTheDePauwTrust.Thiswillsurelyhelpenrollmentforstudentwhoshowfinancialneed.Wewill,ofcourse,knowalotmoreasDePauwcomestoMay1.Sohere’stoCindyBabingtonandthatcrucialeffort.Next,wehavenowheardfromtheIndependentReviewCommitteemembersthat,nowthattheopencommentperiodisover,theyarewritingtheirreportandrecommendations.WeareexpectingthisreporttobemadeavailabletotheUniversitybeforespringbreak.Wehaveateamoncampusassembledtomakesurethatthereportismadeavailabletothecampus,andthatwehavearobustprocessinplacetoallowustoworkwiththerecommendationsoffered.Wewillalsoworkwiththecityincoordinatingthereleaseofthereport.IknowthatworkontheDayofDialogueiscontinuingamongfacultyandstudents,andIknowthattheDiversityandEquityCommitteeisworkingonafull,firstdraftoftheFiveYearDiversityandInclusionPlan.Iexpectthatyouwillhearupdatesonthosefacultyandstaffworkingontheseeffortsoverthenextfewweeks.Oncampusprojects,HooverHallandStewartPlazaremainonscheduleandontime.RightnowwearestillplanningonhavingHooverHallandWallaceStewartCommonsoperationalattheendofOctoberin2016.Atthattime,constructionwillbeginonboththeHubandtheDen,convertingtheseintomoreflexible,usablespacesforourstudents.Wehaveneverhadatruestudentuniononthiscampus,andwenowhavethepossibilityfortwosuchspacesforstudentsbytheendofthenextacademicyear.AnneHarrisandothersareleadingcontinuedplanningeffortsontherenovationofRoyOWestLibrarynowthatwehavethegreenlightfromtheBoardtoconsideroptionsgreaterthana$5Mrenovationspendwillallow.WorkwillbeginthissummeronsignificantrenovationstotheWomen’sCenter,theAAASHouseandtheDorothyBrownCulturalCenter.Plansforalltheseprojectswillberefinedthroughthisspringthroughconsultationwiththosewhousethesebuildingsandcenters.Thereisalotofworklefttomakesurethisyear’soperatingbudgetclosesinabalancedstate.BradandIareworkingcloselywithCabinetcolleaguestomakesurewebalancethebudgetforanotheryear.Idon’texpectanythingdrastichappening,butIknowthatBradandhisteamwillbelookingatholdingsomeadministrativepositionsopenforabit,ifneeded,tokeepthebudgetontherightsideofvirtuethroughtheyear.Finally,myowntravelsandMelanie’sarefocusedonclosinggiftstoendowmentoverthenexttwomonths,movingDePauwascloseaswecantothe$100milliongoalforneed-basedaidintheDePauwTrustthisyear.Ihopetohaveannouncementsaboutthesegiftsinshortorder.Iknowthatthisisaveryoperationalreport,butIwouldbehappytoansweranyquestionsyoumighthaveonthisoranyothermatter.TherewerenoquestionsforPresidentCasey.12. INTERDISCIPLINARYMAJORAninterdisciplinarymajorconsistsofanintegratedseriesofcoursesselectedfromatleasttwooftheconventionalacademicdisciplines.InterdisciplinarymajorsareavailableinAfricanaStudies,AsianStudies,ConflictStudies,FilmStudiesandWomen'sStudies.Studentsalsohavetheopportunitytodevise,inconsultationwithfacultyadvisors,anacademicprogramsuitedtoanareaofspecialinterest.Althoughanygeneralproblemofagenuineacademic,scientificorintellectualnaturemayconstitutethesubjectofaninterdisciplinarymajor,suchamajorisordinarilydefinedinoneofthreeways:

• anareaoftheworld,geographically,politicallyorculturallyprescribed,suchastheUnitedStates,LatinAmerica,Asia,EastEuropeortheMiddleEast;

• aperiodoftimeinthehistoryofsomepartoftheworld,suchastheVictorianAge,theEnlightenment,theRenaissanceortheMiddleAges;or

• aspecificproblemthatistreatedbyseveraldisciplines,suchastheconceptofsocialjustice,theartistinthemodernworld,therhetoricofrevolutionarymovementsorpoliticalmodernization.

Theinterdisciplinarymajorincludesatotalof10to12coursesinatleasttwodisciplinesandatleastfourcoursesfromeachofthetwodisciplines.Atleastfourcoursesinthetotalmustbeatthe300-400level.Eachindividualizedmajorissupervisedbyacommitteeofthreefacultymembers.Aninterdisciplinarymajormustincludeatleast16coursesoutsidethesubjectmatteroftheareamajorinvolvedandmayhavenomorethaneightcoursesinanyonediscipline(subject)comprisingthemajor.However,upto10coursesmaybetakeninalanguageaspartoftheinterdisciplinarymajor.ExceptionstotheseguidelinesmaybemadeforspecificprogramsuponapprovaloftheCommitteeonAcademicPolicyandPlanning.Inselectingasubjectforanindependentlydesignedinterdisciplinarymajor,studentsshouldbeguidedbytwofurtherconsiderations.First,amereinterestincertainacademicdisciplines,howevercloselyrelatedtheymayappear,isnotasignificantjustificationforaninterdisciplinarymajor.Studentsmusthaveinmindasubjectthatcanserveasafocalpointforthecourseschosen.Second,althoughthesubjecttobeexaminedinthemajormaycoincidewiththevocationalinterestsofastudent,itmustatthesametimebealegitimateobjectofstudyinitsownright.Thestudentmustearna2.0GPAinallcoursecreditappliedtothemajor,and,asapartofthemajor,eachstudentduringthesenioryearmustsatisfactorilycompleteoneormoreofthefollowing:aseminar,thesis,appropriateprojectordepartmentalcomprehensiveexamination.Eachinterdisciplinarymajorcommitteeshalldesignatewaysinwhichstudentsmayfulfillthiscomprehensiverequirement.Upontherecommendationoftwofacultymembersfromthedisciplinesrelevanttothemajor,studentsapplytotheOfficeofAcademicAffairsforadmissionearlyinthesecondsemesterofthesophomoreyear.StudentstakinganindependentinterdisciplinarymajorshouldhavethemajorapprovedandfiledwiththeOfficeoftheRegistrarbytheendofthesixthweekofthesecondsemesterofthesophomoreyear.Thelatestthatapplicationsmaybeconsideredisthesixthweekofthejunioryear.
