Fl rida StyleBeach Wear Dos and Don’ts
As summer comes to a close – wait, what? Oh, that’s right, summer is never over in sunny South Florida. Summer just takes a break for two weeks in December. I mean, a well-deserved vacation is justified, isn’t it? The sun shines down on us while the fallen snow inches up toward the sky year after year in the less fortunate states. Yikes.
There are many perks to living where others vacation. A disadvantage, however, is that our heat-pervaded land is like the hot girl at the club admired by those near and far. So hot, in fact, that people come over to Florida and just start ripping off their clothes. Hold it, firecracker. Before you throw on your flip-flops and strip down to your man thong, there are a few unwritten rules to abide by.
DON’T wear socks with your sandals. It’s never been “in” and it’s weird. DO lose the foot undies and sport your sliders and flip-flops sock-free.
Oh, and while you’re at it…
DON’T showoff your northern Sasquatch feet – you’ll scare away the children.DO get a pedicure (males and females) or at least learn how to do some basic at-home grooming.
By Elyssa Schwartz
8
DON’T come to the beach with a cake-face of makeup. You’re at the beach for crying out loud.DO be natural. The sun will give you a genuine glow, anyway.
DON’T leave your junk all over the beach. We don’t want your trash nor do the fish.DO pick it up. There are garbage cans and recycling bins all over Delray. Find one and discard your waste. Thanks.
DON’T make fun of others for being too red, too round, too saggy, too thin or for showing too much epidermis.DO understand that body shaming is not welcomed here. Whether you’re vacationing or staycationing, leave your personal insecurities at home and avoid projecting them onto others.
And finally,
DO be yourself. Be comfortable and wear whatever it is that makes you feel confident. If that happens to be socks with sandals, so be it.
Oh, and don’t forget that SPF 80. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

Beards. Wiry, Brillo Pad-esque beards. Everywhere. Whom started this trend? Most likely, it was someone with an astigmatism that sported dark-rimmed glasses. Or, is that just part of the fad as well? Are these bearded bros with thick, plastic spectacles, plaid button-downs and bowties a race of their own? Looking for any and all answers.
According to the dictionary, a hipster is defined in the English language as: usually a young person who is trendy, stylish, or progressive in an unconventional way.
Unconventional, indeed.
A male hipster’s uniform typically consists of well-groomed facial hair, tight jeans (often cuffed), a deep v-neck T-shirt, a knit beanie and even a scarf. Yes -- in Florida, a scarf. Similarly, the female hipster can often be sighted wearing comparable attire with a feminine flare. High-waisted denim cut-offs and leggings are common along with round, oversized sunglasses and a plaid
button-down tied effortlessly around their waists.
Research tells us that these young hipster folk were formally known as the “scene” kids during their high school days. Today, rumor
has it that they hang out in craft beer joints and often manage breweries for a living. In fact, the word is that
hipsters live solely off of a diet consisting of craft beer and food truck fare alone.
Believe it or not, the hipster society have

actually created more jobs equating to more revenue for South Florida including Delray Beach. As hipsters swarm Atlantic Ave, their presence brings a demand for beard oil and mustache wax to achieve the perfect handlebar mustache. As previously mentioned, craft beer taverns are literally watering holes around here. Oh, and you may want to consider selling your jeans, you know... the one’s that are a tad too tight in the back of your closet, to Kismet Recycles Vintage & Designer Clothing on The Ave. Why? Hipsters practically have land sonar for finding gently-used skintight denim. See, we all win!
A much obliged thanks is in order to all the hipsters out there. Many possess a minimalistic lifestyle which helps to avoid over-consumption which our community desperately needs. We can all learn a few things from these free spirits. Here’s to you all -- keep it up. Cheers!
Five signs that you’re a hipster: 1. More than three of your friends are bartenders at hole-in-the-wall bars.
2. You choose to listen to record players because you prefer the “sound quality.”
3. You were a barista at one point in your life.
4. You’ve worn eyeglasses although you have 20/20 vison.
5. If your Instagram has one or more of the following photos:
- a subtle-smile selfie with an obviously justifiable quote.
-a recent group photo of you and your friends that looks like it’s from the 90s-grunge era.
- your Starbucks latte.

Name : Mike Turowsky Restaurant: Surf Shack Subs & SmoothiesHometown: Long Island, Brooklyn & NYCSign: Gemini
Delray Beach Passport: Why did you decide to settle down in Delray Beach?Michael: I’ve been familiar with this area for many years and have always loved it here. When I closed up my Paradise Café in NYC after a 20 year run my wife Uli & I felt the timing was right plus my Mom, Sister & Brother-in-law live here in Delray as well. Although we were torn between Kuai, HI , California & Mexico we know we made the best choice, its just so easy here.
DBP: You designed the Shack’s unique outdoor patio, what is your favorite part or the space?M: That’s a tough one. I had a blast gathering up the surf boards, from both friends as donations to purchasing some from locals all sharing memories of their boards. Then turning them into tables. I also enjoyed finding the Tiki Masks & iguanas. The Bamboo fencing & Thatch roof, oh and the amazing Bamboo paint job that Jerry did….
DBP: When not at the Surf Shack, what are you up to?M: My wife Uli & I are Paddle Boarders and are lucky enough to live only a few blocks to the ocean. So that’s most likely where you will find us, on our boards in the water or on the beach & hopefully with our pup Oakley in tow.
DBP: What’s your favorite hang out in Delray Beach (other than the Surf Shack)?M: We like 3rd & 3rd a lot as well as DaDa ,Tryst, El Camino, Beer Trade Co...
DBP: To you what is the definition of the perfect sandwich?M: You will find this answer all over my menu. Try my Cubano, Italian, PO BOY, Muffaletta, Bahn Mi or Big Ka Tuna to start.
Stop by and say hi to Mike and the guys at 916 SE 5th AveDelray Beach, FL 33483.
