Background to the creation of the zine: Time Traveler…

17

“The Time Traveler” by Debora Alanna

The title of this zine comes from the title image, and the final image

“The Time Traveler” composite of collage and later formatted with text.

Time traveling in this zine refers to an amalgamation...

Memory, consideration of and respect for the past addresses

future possibilities colouring the resolve to develop, produce work in the

presence and impact of delight akin to travelling.

“Biography of the Sun” by Debora Alanna

“Biography of the Sun” began as a collage of images that were subsequently painted.

Text cut from a magazine was added and became the title of this work.

A digitally rematserd image was rendered black & white for the zine.

This work is about the octopus influence for the artist, how the sun radiates as ideas represented by octo-tenacles capricious and overlapping.

These influences are powerful and generate a release of bias allowing the past to mingle with the new. Its allure and innate presence are a story.

“Conversation” by Debora Alanna

Beginning as a watercolour painting, collage material was added to the work.

The image was recoloured digitally and later rendered black & white to marry the painting to cut out images.

“Conversation” utilises octopus imagery to demonstrate lighthearted banter between the sexes.

20

“Mizmaze” by Debora Alanna

“Mizmaze” originated as a ball-point pen drawing on paper that was digitally remasterd for the zine.

This work is about the intricacies of existence and resolve to live generously as an octopus matrix.

“The world’s last mysteries” by Debora Alanna

A painted collage that was rendered black & white for the zine,

“The world’s last mysteries” is a description of a

woman’s interest and salute to her relations with men.

22

“There is no table between us” by Debora Alanna

A photo of a chalk drawing by a stranger was digitally manipulated and remasterd into an “There is no table between us”.

This work shows how the attention of one to another is obvious and yet precarious. This caricature of human relations playswith a cartoon octopus perspective.

23

“Octavio Paz” by Debora Alanna

Named after the poet, “Octavio Paz” in recognition and reference to his writing,

“Labyrinth” began as a collaged image with paint treatment subsequently remastered / digitally rendered black & white for the zine.

Working with the labyrinth concept , this image is about the

buoyancy of present time, place, the

silence produced through emotional space where suspended belief in connectivity is a maze that holds humanity.

24

“Okto-beatz”by Debora Alanna

With a firm reference to beat poets, this work was initially a pen on paper drawing. A digital drawing was superimposed on the original, and digitally remastered.

This work is about surviving and thriving in spite of life challenges.

25

“Insatiable” by Debora Alanna

Word art was superimposed on this black and white pen drawing.

The image was repeated with different words to form a diptych within the zine.

This two paged inclusion is about the movement and depths constituting attributes of physicality.

“Insatiable” describes our corporeal , emotional and intellectual selves as we relate to octopuses.

26

“We have no chaperone here”by Debora Alanna

Black and white in the zine, this image is mirrored with another of the same, upside down on the same page.

Brought together with the text of the title and overlayed dots, it was rendered black & white.

This work is about self-consciousness within burgeoning relationships.

Time is a texture and a gesture where figures are wary and become the background and foreground.
