Standard PURE-LINE Purification Tray sizesare 24 x 24 x 1 and 12 x 24 x 1 nominal. EachPurification Tray has a black epoxy enamel finishand may be recharged/refilled. Most commonly,i t is f i l led wi th s tandard coconut shel lactivated carbon, but impregnated potassiumpermanganate is available as well. The tray mayalso be fabricated from stainless steel or offeredas a metal-disposable 24 x 24 x 2 tray.

BLC’s standard PURE-LINE unit design,whether it be Front Access or Side Access, isbased on 1" trays. Why 1" trays? Because 1"trays allow the greatest amount or pounds ofcarbon to be situated in the most efficient amountof space. Trays that have greater depths than 1"or 2" limit the amount of immediate surface areaor exposure area of carbon to the air stream andhave greater pressure drops. This results in higheroperating costs and more expensive HVACsystems to drive the air. For example: a nominal4" carbon panel 24 x 24 houses roughly 30 lbs. ofadsorbent and has only 2 sides or 7.5 square feetof exposed surface area. Additionally, its initialpressure drop is 2 1/2 times higher than that of a1" tray. Using BLC’s standard design, a quantityof (4) 1" trays would be utilized for the sameapplication. These trays would house 32 lbs. ofcarbon, would have 60% less initial pressure dropthan the 4" panel, and would expose a remarkable30.4 square feet of immediate surface area to theair stream. It’s BLC’s HVAC expertise that dictatesour design. For performance cost and quality,there’s really nothing better!

All BLC’s Purification Trays are manufactured from 26 gauge framematerial, supplied with 26 gauge perforated metal, and coated with ablack epoxy enamel finish. Activated Carbon (PLACT) Purification Traysare filled with coconut shell carbon, 60% carbon tetrachloride (ASTM D-3467) suitable for removal of typical odors in an occupied space withremoval of organic contaminants. Pure Tech 50 (PLP50) PurificationTrays are filled with pelletized activated alumina impregnated withpotassium permanganate for enhanced performance in removing H2S,SO2 and NO2 from the air stream. Pure Tech 55 (PLP55) PurificationTrays are filled with pelletized activated alumina impregnated withpotassium permanganate for enhanced performance in removingethylene, formaldehyde and other odor compounds from the air stream.

Many adsorbent materials have been developed, each with a specialaffinity for certain vapors. While carbon is an efficient adsorber of many odors,a special formulation of potassium permanganate and activated alumina readilyadsorbs and oxidizes many of the same odors as carbon and other gaseousair contaminants that carbon does not. A porous and multi-faceted pellet, thismaterial is placed into holding trays which fit into the tray tracks of BLC’s FrontAccess Module or Carbon Housing. Pure Tech 50 and 55 are two commonlyused formulas of this material.

Pure Tech 50 (PLP50) is specifically formulated for control of hydrogensulfide and similar acidic and/or sulfur bearing materials. Generated by manyindustrial processes and by waste water treatment processes, control ofhydrogen sulfide is of major concern. Not only noxious to human beings, itcan also cause corrosion of delicate micro-circuitry in process controlequipment. A partial list of applications would include computer rooms, wastewater treatment plants, paper mills, chemical plants, printing facilities,electronics facilities, and foundries.

Pure Tech 55 (PLP55) is specifically recommended both for identifiableorganic chemicals (such as ethylene and formaldehyde) and applicationsinvolving general odor reduction and energy conservation. Found in manyhouseholds and office buildings, and intentionally used in hospitals, mortuaries,and various industries, removal of formaldehyde has become necessary sinceit is a suspected carcinogen. Control of ethylene (a plant hormone whichspeeds the ripening process) is necessary in the produce and florist industries.Pure Tech 55 is also an effective odor adsorber for the use of cleaning airbefore recirculating and the removal of cooking odors from exhaust air.

Adsorbent Materials – Carbon, Pure Tech 50/55

Used to adsorb materials that arein the gaseous or vaporized state,materials that cannot be removed byparticulate filters, activated carbon(PLACT) has proven to be one of themost efficient purifying agents known.Activated carbon, with its internalstructure of multi-faceted surfaces,separates and holds odors andimpurities. A pound of activated carbon(approximately 50 cubic inches) yields6,000,000 square feet of surface area,allowing an incredibly high volume ofadsorption. The effective life of activatedcarbon varies with the type andconcentration of odors. The poroussurface of the carbon eventuallybecomes saturated with odors and losesits capacity for further adsorption. Thecarbon trays should then be replaced orreactivated. For those odors whichcarbon has a high capacity rating, expecta weight increase of 20% to 50% for fullyloaded trays. Replacing or renewing ofsaturated trays with new or reactivatedcarbon is the only maintenancenormally required.
