SC asks state barcouncils to completelawyers’ verificationNEW DELHI, Aug 23:

The Supreme Court todaygranted the last opportunity to allstate bar councils to complete theverification process of lawyers,initiated to weed out those advo-cates having fake degrees.

The apex court directed theBar Council of India (BCI) to file astatus report after receiving repliesfrom all the state bar councils.

A bench of Justices R KAgrawal and A M Sapre granted 15days to the lawyers to submit theirforms for verification of degrees bythe BCI under the BCI (Certificateof Practice) Rules, 2015.

The court also directed thestate bar councils to completethe verification process within amonth after the lawyers submit-ted their forms.

It also said that the universi-ty authorities shall ensure veri-fication of degrees awarded bythem without any charge, with-in a month on its presentation.

The bench said the state barcouncils will then have to pre-pare electoral rolls based on theverification and they will haveto declare the schedule of elec-tions after expiry of 75 days.

It directed the state barcouncils to take necessary stepsand conclude the proceedingsby December 31 and send areply to the BCI.

“The BCI is directed torequest a retired judge of theSupreme Court in order to controland supervise the verificationprocess and preparation ofElectoral Rolls. We direct theBCI to take all steps in this regardimmediately in order to do theneedful,” the bench said.(PTI)
