LET’S GET LOUD Watching from one of the Official GC2018 Public Viewing Areas or from the side of the road, you are part of the course. Cheer, yell and applaud athletes as they take on the challenges of the race. Bang your saucepans or bring your cowbells to line the course and make some noise. There’s plenty of ways to celebrate and decorate! We have lots of ideas in our Embrace the Race toolkit and our Celebrate GC2018 information pack.
KEEP HYDRATED Hydration is important for both athletes and spectators. Make sure you bring plenty of water with you. Choose Tap! The City of Gold Coast has a number of public water refill points in and around the course. Please bring a reusable water bottle to refill during the day.
BE A GOOD SPORT You can get close to the action of the riders, but make sure to stay behind the barriers (including selfie sticks), listen to the stewards and only cross at the pedestrian crossing points along the route. Dogs must be kept on a lead and filming must be for personal, non-commercial purposes only and flash photography is prohibited during competition.
GC2018 ROADSIDE TIPS
BE PREPARED The only way to get around the course will be by foot or bike so ensure you are wearing comfortable clothing and footwear. Take a folding chair, hat, water and sunscreen.
Race walking demands a combination of endurance and impeccable technique. There are two rules the athletes must adhere to:
The first is maintaining contact with the ground at all times (to the naked eye), and the second is that the athlete’s lead leg must be straightened from the moment it hits the ground until the vertical upright position. At GC2018, the stakes are high and athletes will be racing for medals and glory!
Fast Facts:• Elite male walkers can reach a speed of
over 15 km/hr (4:00 min/km) and elite female walkers can reach a speed of over 13 km/hr (4:30 min/km).
• The Commonwealth Games records are held by Na than Deakes, AUS (1:19:55, 2006) and Jane Saville, AUS (1:32:46, 2006).
• Australia has won 9 of the 15 men’s Commonwealth Games gold medals on offer since 1966.
• Australia has won 5 of the 6 women’s Commonwealth Games gold medals on offer since 1990.
AthleticsRACE WALKS
Road Cycling events are fast, brutal and thrilling to watch. Two Road Cycling disciplines will be contested at GC2018, the Individual Time Trial and the Road Race.
Fast Facts:• It is anticipated that the winners of the
Individual Time Trials will maintain an average speed around 49km/h for the men and 41km/h for the women.
• At GC2018, the average speed for the men’s Road Race will be around 47km/h, the women will be around 38km/h.
• The bike’s aerodynamics and the rider’s position - sitting as low and flat as possible - are important as most of the rider’s effort goes into overcoming aerodynamic drag.
• In the Individual Time Trial race, there is the famous ‘hot seat’. As the race progresses, the top three riders will sit in the hot seat located near the start ramp. The three riders who occupy the hot seats at the end of the event will be the final medallists.
