Background:Ratherthancreatingvideosfromscratch,itisoftenmoreeffectivetoplaytheroleofcuratorandmakeuseofthesomeofthebroadrangeofexistingmaterialsthatarealreadyonYouTube.Bylinkingandembeddingvideoclipswithinourvirtualpatientcases,wefindseveraladvantages:

1. Lessneedtocreatemoreoriginalvideomaterials,whichcanbecostly2. Becausetheyarelinked,notcopied,thisbypassesmanycopyrightconcerns3. Wecanpointdirectlytoprecisestartandendpointsineachvideo4. Wecanadditionalnarratedsoundtrackswithoutcompromisingtheoriginals5. Wecanaddannotationswithoutcompromisingtheoriginals6. Wecanhyperlinktoothermaterialsfromwithintheembeddedvideoframe

HowtouseCVM:AlthoughCVMhasbeenwrittenasastandaloneservice,atpresentwehaveintegrateditwithinOpenLabyrinth.So,firstyouneedtologintohttp://demo.openlabyrinth.ca/asanauthor.UsethemenuTools | Video MashuptolaunchCVM.

Copy/pastetheURLfortheYouTubevideoyouwishtouseasyoursourcematerialandclickthegreen[Next]button

ModifytheStartandEndtimingpointsusingthedropdowns:

Thisexamplestartsat00:01:23andendsat00:02:34.Clickthegreen[Next]buttonChoosewhetheryouwishtoaddanaudiotrackofyourown,andifso,selectthefiletoupload.(Atpresent,CVMwillhandleWAVandMP3files.)

Hereyouwillseethatashortfilehasbeenuploaded,‘test IDL audio.wav’.Justaswiththevideofiles,youcancueastartanendpointfortheaudiofile.Notethatthesetimepointsrefertostartandstoppointswithintheaudiofile.Thetimingsarerelativepositionsfromthevideostartpoint,notabsolutetimingpointswithintheoriginalvideofile.(Sowiththeabove,theaudiooverlaywillstartat1:23withinthevideofile,attheverystartoftheaudiofile,andwillfinishplaying11secslater,at1:34inthevideofile.)Youcanalsoadjusttherelativeplaybackvolume(0-100%)ofthenewlyappendedsoundtrackandtheoriginalsoundtrackontheYouTubevideo.Thisisfixedfortheentiresnippet.Therearenofancyfades–sorry.Click[Next]tomoveontotheAnnotations.Ifyouselect‘Yes’,thenyoucanaddoneormoreannotationbubblestothevideotrack.Fillintheparametersforthebubble,suchasbackgroundcolor,shape,height,widthandthetextyouwanttodisplay.Youcanalsosettimingpointsforwhentheannotationistoappearandwhentoend.Click[Addannotation]toattachthistoyourvideo.

Ifyoumakechangestotheparameters,clickthe[Update]buttontoseethosechangesineffect.Youcanalsodragtheannotationbubblearoundonthescreenratherthanenterxandycoordinates.Modifystartandstoptimesfortheannotationtoappear.Aswiththeaudiofiles,thesearerelativestartandendpointsfromthestartofyoursnippet,notabsolutetimesintheoriginalvideosourcefile.

Click[Next]onceyouarehappywithyourchanges.Finallyclickthe[Generate code]buttonandyouwillgetthesourcecodeforthesnippetthatyouneedtoembedintoyourNode.

NowcopythatcodetoyourclipboardandpasteitintoyourHTMLeditor.Formostauthors,thatwillbeintheOpenLabyrinthNodeEditorforthepagewhereyouwanttoembedthisvideo.Clickon[Nodes]ontheleftsidemenu,thenchoosetheNodewhereyouwanttoembedthisvideosnippet.Clicktheblue[Edit]buttonforthatNode.

Mashupcreationprocess:NowbeforeyougettoreallyplaywiththeCVMtool,mostofthetimeyouwillneedtodosomehomeworktofindgoodsourcematerials.Atpresent,weareonlyusingYouTubeforoursourcematerialsbutothersmaybeaddedlater.Hereisasuggestedworkflowforcuratingyourmaterials:

1. Planyourlearningobjectivesforthetopic.Referbacktotheseasyougo–itiseasytoforgetpoints.

2. Itishelpfultohaveanexistingtargetpageorlabyrinthinmindbutthisisnotessentialatthisstage.

3. SearchforpossiblematerialsonYouTube.Thismaybequickorquitetimeconsuming.Youmayhavetobeinventiveinyoursearchterms

4. CopypotentialvideoURLsintoyourworksheet.5. Itisquitelikelythatyouwillcomebackafterwardstoplanyourtimings.
