assiberglass columns from Crown Column & Millwork are a satisfying
combination of modern-day technology and low maintenance care. Each column shaft is
produced with the lower one third straight and the upper two thirds tapered, creating a
correct architectural entasis. Entasis, attributed to ancient Greek architecture, is the
slight convex curving of the column shaft resulting in a most pleasing appearance.
Fiberglass columns are available in plain and fluted shafts. Our fluted round columns
are cast fluted, resulting in a crisp, deep and architecturally correct Ionic flute. Fluted
columns are available in a wide range of sizes from 6” through 16” diameter. The columns
are a composition of cast glass-reinforced polymers with exceptional strength and durability.
Priming and painting with an oil-based or latex coating is all that is necessary after
installation. They exceed requirements for flame spread and smoke density (SDA) and
each has a NFPA class A rating and BOCA Type I rating for flame spread and
smoke development.
Non-tapered plain cast columns are available in 8”, 10”, 12” and 14” diameters up
to 16’ in length. All Crown fiberglass columns come with a limited lifetime warranty
for material and workmanship when properly installed.

rown Column’s filament wound offering
includes 14” up to 30” diameters (custom sizes are
also available). The filament wound column defines
easy installation. This lightweight yet strong and
durable product is the best choice for exterior projects
which call for large columns. The winding process
of the column allows for a high concentration of
fiberglass and a lower concentration of resins. The
high content of fiberglass gives this product the
durability and strength required of large exterior
columns. Eliminating the need for a crane to install
this column also makes it an ideal selection. Fib

assquare fiberglass columns offer an alternative to the
more traditional round columns. Crown’s plain square
fiberglass columns are made from specially formulated
glass-reinforced polymers with a one-piece shaft
and applied astragal with an attractive capital and
base molding. Crown’s square fiberglass column is
both lightweight and strong, resulting in a column
that is easy to handle, water-resistant and impervious
to moisture-related problems.
Fluted square fiberglass columns are also available
and are produced by the same process as fiberglass
round columns with glass-reinforced polymers. The
astragal is cast on the column; the flutes are crisp, deep
and architecturally correct. Typical options for any
fiberglass column include: cutting at the bead, cutting
to overall length, splitting, and tabbing for reassembly.

a Tuscan capital and base molding and are made
from materials that are water resistant, rot resistant
and impervious to insect infestation. Optional design
styles include the Attic base molding, the Roman
Doric captial and base molding and Contemporary
caps and bases for non-tapered fiberglass columns.
For the more traditional installations, Crown
offers a full range of decorative capitals that can be

Colonial & Authentic Wood Column Collection

oodhe Colonial wood column is the most popular
choice in our stock wood column collection. The
Colonial column is available both plain and fluted
and is manufactured with a double bead molding.
The Colonial column has a gradual straight taper.
The Authentic wood column is also available
plain or fluted and has a double taper approximately
one foot below the top of the shaft. The exaggerated
taper gives the authentic column a distinctive
appearance at the neck molding of the shaft.
Typical options for wood columns include: cutting
at the bead, cutting to overall length, altering flute
length, prime one coat, prime/sand/prime, application
of asphaltum, splitting, and splining for reassembly.

rown’s Classic wood column is an upgraded
selection to the Colonial and Authentic styles.
Available with a plain or fluted shaft, the Classic
column is manufactured with a one-third straight,
two-third radius taper (correct entasis). The bead
detail is more sophisticated and has an architectural
attractiveness.
Every column shaft is made with finger-jointed
staves for added strength and stability. The staves
are joined using tongue and groove joints with Type
I exterior glues and each shaft is treated with a
wood preservative. All sizes for wood columns
include the standard Tuscan capital, column shaft
and Tuscan base and plinth.

rown’s wood porch and lamp posts add a
distinctive touch to any style home. Porch posts are
often used as supporting elements for porches.
Combined with balusters, hand and shoe rail, and
decorative millwork, porch posts establish the popular
Victorian style.
Crown’s wood porch posts are constructed of select
softwoods, laminated and finger-jointed for greater
strength and stability. The wood porch posts are
available in a variety of sizes and styles.
Cast aluminum plinths are an available option
for providing proper ventilation at the bottom of the
post. Elevating and ventilating the porch post
provides protection from moisture absorption. Uplift
kits are also available.

t Crown, our attention to detail and devotion to the classical orders are
absolute. Because our standards are exacting, we produce columns certain to
meet your individual needs, regardless of the shape, size, design, or species
of wood that you require. We closely control the quality and preciseness of
entasis, projections and profiles as our master craftsmen make each
architectural column to your custom specifications.
Through our extensive lumber sources, Crown carries virtually every type
of wood, be it a standard exterior such as Western Red Cedar and Clear
All-Heart Redwood, or an interior paint grade such as finger-jointed pine
or poplar. Crown uses only the best kiln-dried lumber available. Exotic
hardwoods such as teak, mahogany, cherry, walnut and other highly
sought after species are available in unlimited designs.
Premium finishing services are included in the pricing of our custom-made
architectural products. This includes two or
three coats of primer to prepare the surface for
painting at the job site. We precisely trim
each end of the shaft and apply an exterior
treatment of asphaltum paint inside the entire
length of the shaft. We also construct heavy
custom wooden crates to ensure safe transit.

To ensure a maximum product life and successful installation, follow these tips for care, handling and installation:
1. Always keep wood products in a dry, well-ventilated area until you are ready to begin painting.
2. Exterior applications require only the best exterior grade oil-based paint. Apply at least one coat prior to installation toseal the wood against moisture. Then, apply your finish coats once your columns have been erected.
3. Always provide for sufficient ventilation. Proper airflow is one of the keys to a successful installation. Moisture-related problemsmay be avoided by using a recessed soffit (see drawing) and providingequal amounts of air flow at both the top and bottom of the shaft.
4. Maintain your columns regularly. Check for ventilation, bird’s nests, insects, etc., and touch up the oil-based paint on all exposed surfaces. Repaint as necessary.
When properly installed and maintained, architectural wooden columns will make a significant and long-lasting addition to your project.
