What is Schoology?www.schoology.com

Schoology is an online course management system that allows teachers to create and manage academic courses for their students. It provides teachers with a method of managing lessons, engaging students, sharing content, and connecting with other educators.

Logging in to SchoologySchoology allows three ways to log in:

•Instructor—Sign up for a free Schoologyaccount

• Student—Requires an access code that is provided by the instructor

•Parent—Requires an access code that is provided by the instructor

Students & Parents: Access Code

When an instructor creates a Schoologyaccount, they are provided with an access code that allows students and parents access to the instructor’s course in Schoology.

Schoology: Opening ScreenSchoology has three menus locatedacross the top of theopening screen:

• Courses• Groups• Resources

There are four menus across the left side of the screen:

• Recent Activity• Calendar• Messages• People

Schoology: Recent ActivityThe “Recent Activity” menu displays the most current actions that have taken place on your Schoology account.

You can post an update to your accountand select which page to post it on.

You can also create an event that willbe posted to your calendar. Enter “When”, a “Title”, a “Description”, and choose which pageto post it to.

Recent Activity: Personal Blog Post

On the Recent Activity page, click on the “More” menu and select “Personal Blog Post”. Here you can post your thoughts and musings on anything relating to your courses!

Schoology: Calendar

Any events youPost on your “Recent Activity” page will be displayed on your SchoologyCalendar page.

You can choose to view your calendar by the month, by the week, or by each individual day.

Schoology: MessagesOn the “Messages” menu, you can send messages and/or view messages from other Schoology users. This is not an e-mail service; you can only communicate with other Schoology users whose invitations to communicate, you have accepted, as well as those users who have accepted your invitations.Your messages are available in either your “Inbox” or “Sent Messages”.

Schoology: PeopleOn the “People” menu, you can view the Schoology users that are in your “circle”, including those in your School Directory, those who you have made connections with, as well as Suggested Connections (based on people you already communicate with). In this matter, Schoology functions in a manner similar to social

networking sites.

You can also search for other Schoologyusers, and add them to your Connections list.

Schoology App Center

You can download a variety of apps to use in your Schoologycourses. Just click the blue button labeled “Install App”.

The apps that you install can be seen on the left side of the display, under “App Center”.

“Courses” Menu

Under the “Courses” menu, you can create a new course, join a previously established course, or browse through a list of established courses.

Creating a CourseWhen creating a new course in Schoology, you will need to provide the following information:

• Course Name

• Section Name

• Subject Area (list of subjectsshown on right)

• Grade Level

•Grading Period

Once Your Course is created…Once your course is created, you have a number of sections available on the left side of the course:

• Materials• Updates• Gradebook• Attendance• Members• Analytics

Notice the accesscode that allows Students and parentsaccess to your course!

Courses: Materials

In the “Materials”section, you canupload your own course materials;add assignments;add online tests and quizzes; add files and/or linksto websites; picturealbums; and additional pagesas needed.

You can create your own

original tests and quizzes

using Schoology.

Files/LinksYou can upload any files you wish to use in your courses as well as any website links that you wish to use in your Schoology courses.

You can then organize them and place them in any folder in your course that you wish.

Courses: Gradebook

You can also enter students’ names and assignments in the Gradebook section of theCourses menu.

Choose your grading period,weight your grades as needed,and choose your grading scale(numeric or letter grade)

Courses: Attendance

You can also useSchoology to keeptrack of your classroom attendance if you wish.

Courses: AnalyticsYou can use the “Analytics” feature under the Courses menu to keep track of the number of times each page in your course is accessed.

You can also view how many times each user has accessed your course, view which assignments have been turned in, which discussions have been participated in, and more.

Schoology: Groups

You can also join or create groups in Schoology. These groups function like message boards that Schoologymembers can post to. When joining a group, you can search for a particular group you wish to join.

The format of each group is similar to that of Facebook.

Pending Requests/NotificationsYou can see if there are any pending requests for you to make in Schoologyby clicking on the icon in the upper right corner of the screen.

The Notifications icon lets you know when students submit assignments or have completed quizzes, tests, or other assignments in Schoology.

“Resources” MenuUse the “Resources”menu to keep track of the documents, files, and imagesthat you upload into your course.

You can even synch up yourSchoology accountwith the filesin your Google Documents!

The Resources menuis separated into “My Resources” and “Public Resources”.

Inviting colleagues to join

Schoology

You can invite your friends and colleagues to join Schoologythrough e-mail, Twitter, or Facebook, or by using a link to share with others.

Schoology has its own channel on YouTube! It has a wide variety of tutorial videos for you to view while learning about Schoology and what it has to offer.
