• Definition“A mound or ridge of living coral, coral skeletons, and

calcium carbonate deposits from other organisms such as calcareous algae”

» Date of origin: mid-18th century

• Important Facts– Corals are in fact animals, even though they may exhibit some of the

characteristics of plants and are often mistaken for rocks.– French biologist J.A. de Peysonell concluded they were animals in

1753– Get as much as 90 percent of their energy from the organic

byproducts of photosynthesis.– Also capture and consume live prey using their tentacles(Night)
