LOCAL RESIDENTS SING IN CARNEGIE HALL AS PART OF NATIONAL CHORAL FESTIVAL
Forty‐two members of the Children’s Chorus of Collin County and the Youth Chorus of Collin County traveled to New York City on June 14‐17 to par cipate in the Na onal Choral fes val. The trip culminated with a performance at Carnegie Hall. While in New York, the Chorus members saw some of the city’s tourist a rac ons. They also enjoyed the Broadway musical, ‘Aladdin’. On their last day they par cipated in a Harbor Cruise around the island of Manha an and past the Statue of Liberty. Janie Oliver, Ar s c Director and Co‐Founder of the Chorus, says: “I believe strongly in what our Chorus has to offer in the way of musical training for children, but it provides so much more than just that. It's also an opportunity for a child to be a part of a community of singers that are all working together to be unified and cohesive. We always are moving toward singing with excellence. That involves se ng worthy goals, and then working as individuals and as a team to achieve them.” The Chorus is a non‐profit, tui on based organiza on whose goal is to provide a quality choral experience for the children and teens who are a part of this organiza on. The Chorus began in the Spring of 2007 with 14 members. There are now over 110 children in three different age group choruses. St. Matthew’s Cathedral Arts to Present “Icons in Transformation” A Traveling Exhibition of Contemporary Art
Inspired by Traditional Icons by Russian Artist Ludmila Pawlowska January 18 – April 5, 2015
“Icons in Transformation,” a dramatic 130 piece traveling exhibit featuring the contemporary art works of internationally ac-claimed Russian – Swedish abstract expressionist, Ludmila Pawlowska, January 18-April 5, 2015 at St. Matthew’s Cathedral, 5100 Ross Avenue. The exhibition is FREE and will be open Tuesday, 11 a.m. – 3 p.m., Wednesday, 6 p.m.-8 p.m., Thursday, 11 a.m. – 3 p.m., Saturday, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m., and by appointment. Docents will be available for FREE guided tours. Call 214-887-6552 for more information or visit Cathedralartsdallas.org. The opening reception with artist Ludmila Pawlowska will be Sun-day, January 18, 2015, 5 p.m. – 8 p.m.
After touring cathedrals and churches throughout Europe and the U.S, this must-see FREE exhibition will be displayed for 10 weeks at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Cathedral. Featuring paintings and sculptures created over the past decade, Icons in Trans-formation explores the interaction between traditional icons painted at Vassilevsky Monastery (Russia), and Pawlowska’s own artwork that explores what it means to be known, seen and loved by God. Rather than stimulating the senses and emotions, icons are meant to exert a calming influence, allowing the viewer to step free of everyday concerns.
Ludmila Pawlowska, a Russian native who now lives in Sweden, is an internationally acclaimed artist in her field. Her work has earned rave reviews, and has been described as “highly original, in-your-face abstract art with a deeply spiritual feel.” Her mod-ern three-dimensional artwork incorporates traditional icon elements such as the use of eyes, metallic paints, and the colors red, blue and gold – while at the same time “bending the rules” through the use of sculpture, collage, large-scale wood panels, natu-ral stone, fabric, and even handwriting in multiple languages.
Icons in Transformation presents the mystery and spiritual power of the icon transformed into modern masterpieces of art. It also highlights traditional Russian icons as a source of inspiration for contemporary art. Pawlowska’s artwork will be dramatically displayed throughout the Cathedral – including the Justus Sundermann Gallery, corridors, and even suspended from the arches of the nave. More information about Ludmila and her work may be found at her website www.ludmilapawlowska.se
A wide range of events will be scheduled during the exhibition including choral concerts, an icon art day for children, an icon evening for youth, lectures and sacred space hours. Opening reception with artist Ludmila Pawlowska Sunday, January 18, 2015, 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. Regular Exhibit Hours: January 19 – April 5, 2015 Guided tours with trained docents: Tuesday, 11 a.m. – 3 p.m., Wednesday 6 p.m. – 8 p.m., Thursday, 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. Saturday, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. Special tour times may be arranged by appointment. Lecture by Jeremy Begbie on "Art and Spirituality" Sunday, February 8, 2015, 5 p.m. – Exhibit open 4 p.m. – 8 p.m. Cathedral and Great Hall Jeremy Begbie is the inaugural holder of the Thomas A. Langford Research Professorship in Theology at Duke University Divini-ty School. What is Cooperative Arts News?
The Mission: The CAN organization was created for the purpose of helping cooperative member arts organizations build audiences by supporting each other. CAN will send notifications to list members with news of member organizations' upcoming events and other arts news of interest. The Rules: 1. Since this is a "cooperative" of arts organizations supporting each other, member groups who
would like to post notices, agree to "receive" notifications from other member groups in return. Individuals will have the option at any time to "opt-out" if they choose not to receive future notifications by e-mailing the list manager.
2. In order to preserve the integrity and quality of the postings to this list and to prevent any unwanted "Spamming," all notifications that member groups want to send through this notification list must come through the list manager. Groups simply send an e-mail notification to the list manager with a descriptive write-up and it will be sent. If there are multiple notifications that need to go out, they may be grouped together to reduce the number of e-mails that are sent to the list.
If at anytime, you would like to be removed from this e-mail list or if you are a new organization that would like to join, please e-mail the list manager and your request will be acted upon in a timely manner. As always, thank-you for supporting the performing arts in the North Texas area! Regards, David Witherspoon List Manager d-witherspoon@ti.com
