OptimalControlofVibratorySystemswithPowerDirectionalityConstraints

ABSTRACT:Inmanyvibrationengineeringapplications,thecontrolhardwareexhibitspowerdirectionalityconstraints.Asimpleexampleissemiactive(i.e.,controllabledamping)vibrationsuppressiontechnologyforvehiclesuspensionsandcivil structures. For these systems, energy absorption is controlled by varying the effective viscosities of controllabledashpot elements. This enables the implementation of high-bandwidth, non-colocated feedback control, but feasiblefeedback lawsareprohibitedfromdrivingpower into thevibratorysystem.Analogousmathematicalproblemsarise inmanyotherareasofvibrationengineering,andrecentlyhaveemergedasafundamentalaspectofcontrolproblemsforvibrationenergyharvestingsystems,includingsmall-scalevibrationenergyscavengers,aswellasMegawatt-scaleoceanwaveenergyconverters. Inthesetechnologies, it isoftenmoreeconomical tousepowertrainsandconvertersthatarecapable of only single-directional power transmission. This talk will discuss some of the implications of powerdirectionalityconstraints, foroptimalcontroldesign.Thepresenceoftheseconstraintscanmakesomecontrolobjectivestrivial - most notably, stability robustness. However, performance optimization can be challenging, especially forproblemsinvolvingstochasticoruncertainsystems.Anattemptwillbemadetoemphasizecommonfeaturessharedbymanyapplicationareas.Exampleswillbepresented,pertainingtopastworkinearthquakeengineering,wirelesssensing,andoceanwaveenergy.
